SoftBank sold its entire $5.83 B NVIDIA stake (32.1 M shares) in October 2025 — a small 0.1% of NVDA’s $5T market cap. The sale, confirmed in its Q2 FY 2025 earnings, is a routine portfolio rotation to raise cash for Masayoshi Son’s $1 T AI and chip ambitions eg OpenAI (SoftBank plans to double its OpenAI stake to 11%). Alongside a $9.17 B T-Mobile divestment, the move frees up funds for $30 B+ in new AI investments.

SoftBank’s Vision Fund history includes major losses (WeWork, Greensill, Wirecard) yet had a win on ARM.

Elon Musk mocked their “Stargate” funding claims saying they do not have the money either to open AI etc... and he was right. SoftBank have liquidity concerns persist given ¥20 T net debt. NVDA dipped ~2% on the news, though i see this as a nothingburger ie not a red flag.

I think it simply underscores SoftBank's need for cash to chase the next big thing.

I remember that Masayoshi Son sold the company's entire 4.9% stake in Nvidia in 2019, a decision he has since publicly regretted it, and now he's really out of NVDA? what to believe here?

What does SoftBank see in OpenAI that Grok isn't going to steamroll?

They have a massive existing userbase they can sell to. If they use that well, even if they serve midwit models they can capitalize on it massively. They seem to be pretty competitive with their models too, many powerusers prefer chatgpt over grok for lots of tasks currently.
