FAKE Reverb with Ring Mod & Psychoacoustics [BETTER BLEEPS!] (Patreon)
Content
Ahoy hoy,
I hope you're well and either recovering from a direct Berlin induced Superbooth cloud of love, inspiration, kick drums and bleeps or from the a mass content overload of event videos that surrounded Superbooth. Superbooth as always was ace, check out the patch tips video I put up if you missed it and Mylar Melodies ace-cakes round up video to get a feel for the event.
BETTER BLEEPS
So here's the return of BETTER BLEEPS, a blink a few years ago and you'll have missed it series I launched that was all about techniques, techniques for making better bleeps. Be it music production, composition or synthesis focused. I intend to more of these, feel free to shout at me in our Discord channels about doing more of these in the future if you'd like them. It's totally gear agnostic and all about presenting the technique not particular to one piece of gear. On that note it's also not sponsored by anyone else either.
STORY TIME
Now for a little story time, I go through this in the video so I'll be brief, Chris from Moog in the Superbooth patch tips video mentioned Rob Hordijk and him using ring modulation to emulate reverb. Now that of course raises questions, scooby doo like confused faces and a few WTF! mumbles as you'd expect. Well it was back in 2017 at an event I held called Modular Meets Leeds that Rob Hordijk presented this "poor mans delay" technique so I took Chris's reference to this and the questions and interest around it and made a video sharing the story, the history of the idea and the technique and here's that video.
There's also a free to download PDF and VCV Rack patch to further enhance the understanding and ability to play with the technique. You can get those HERE.
If you're expecting ambient miracles and black hole reverberant caverns you'll be disappointed, but if you're into nerding synth techniques and surprisingly effective psychoacoustic trickery I think you'll find it fascinating. I vividly remember how evocative this was in the venue when Rob showed this back in 2017. You can hear in the example people laugh out loud at how that made us all feel.
EXCLUSIVE
For the $5+ tier supporters I have an extended video that I'm going to post right after I post this one, here on Patreon. The video shows trying to emulate this fake reverb trick with some real (or DSP at least) reverb software and then tries (and fails) to extend this technique with other modular patches.
Back again with more videos soon, see you all in the Discord!
*PLEASE NOTE*
We are closing off the first DivKid community DIY group buy/build for the variation on the OAM Time Machine. I'll post about this tomorrow but get into the Discord, join the discussion and get your name and info on the Google Sheet (HERE) to get involved. We'll close this off in a week.
