Hello everyone,

here's an update for you all before Patreon introduce changes as of tomorrow (from June 1st 2020). From tomorrow they are legally obliged to start charging sales tax based on new laws passing in several countries and in some states of the USA.

Patreon say that less than half of all patrons will be charged any sales tax and for most the amount will be very small.

Some examples they give are sales tax rates in the USA which range from 4% to 11%. So on a $5 pledge the sales tax would lie between 20 cents and 55 cents.

You will only be charged if you are in a location that requires Patreon to charge you. It's based entirely on your location and what is considered taxable where you are. Patreon say...

"Not every pledge is taxable, not all benefits are taxable in every location and sometimes only a fraction of a pledge will be taxable. The money that Patreon collects as a result of these laws are paid directly to local governments.

If you're in a location where sales tax will be required, you should expect to receive an email from Patreon with more information about this very soon..."

I won't pretend to know anymore than what I've shared from the information from Patreon so far. The link below is what was sent to creators on the platform and if you're curious how this will affect you I suggest you head over and take a read, there's a good breakdown of what's happening. But the short version effectively seems to be you may be charged a few cents more than your pledge amount.

There's a video with Jack Conte Patreon founder here too - https://youtu.be/CvOtULx_cK0

As you may notice in the support link above there's mention of some advanced tax settings I will have access to so I'll take a look through that and if anyone feels they're a charge sales tax incorrectly get in touch with Patreon support and you can ask me too and I'll help the best I can.

cheers all!

Ben.
