Hello, hope you're all well.

Feels like a while since I posted here, a few things have been busy etc etc. Good news though ... my new module should be out before the end of the month. Hoping to update you with firmer details on that by the end of the week. I'll be making sure $5+ tier supporters get the chance to buy the module slightly earlier than public release so watch out for that. Note you can use your exclusive discount codes and affiliate links to do that too - when the time comes.

But to the topic of this post - an album, an album I made for Google. Some of you may remember I made a 10 track album for Google after I was approached to do so for their YouTube Audio Library. When that album was released I made a quick video talking about it and then got some VJ loop visuals and put some videos up for the tracks. A couple of highlights (judging by how it was received) would be two tracks Dreamer and Space Trooper. Although I'd encourage you to go check out the playlist HERE as I'd like to discuss the first album in the video too, presuming there's some questions.

Not long after the release of the first album release I was asked to make another 10 tracks. I was into the idea and like the first figured I'd sub consciously end up making some random compilation of new and old ideas, remake some things I hadn't used and just indulge in no agenda but music that people may want as background music on their YouTube videos. So I produced the album and nothing happened after the project was signed off ... I was then surprised (pleasantly) in December when the tracks appeared as I started getting tagged in videos people were using my music in. So here we are!

Q&A - GET INVOLVED!

For the new album I want to make a video talking about the process and I wanted to open this up as a Q&A to Patreon supporters. Once that videos goes up I'll share my own videos with some visuals like I did last time so I have the songs on my own page as well.

Do you have any questions you'd like me to answer about all this? How it happened, how the library works, specific compositional or production things to talk about?

I want to make some more general music making and production videos and using these tracks as a base for that there's a few things I'd like to cover in the future. So you're questions will help inform that too.

So fire away (leave a comment on this post) with any questions you may have.

THE NEW ALBUM

You need a YouTube account to access the audio library, heading to http://youtube.com/audiolibrary should take you there if you're logged in. Search 'DivKid' and you'll see all the tracks I've made. But I'll highlight some here that people have uploaded so it's easier for you.

Icelandic Arpeggios // Polymetric Juggling // The Gentlemen // Commander Impulse // Empty Moons Of Jupiter // Rich In The 80s

Have a great week, I hope to be back with new module news later this week and do check out the music above and ask some questions. It would be great to chat about music, process, production etc with you all.  Cheers! Ben.

Hi Ben, simple question, do you sequence/perform a whole song in just one recording take? And do you layer each element at a time or you have a core of sounds that make most of the track which you use as the base? Cheers

John Schussler

Any plans to put these up on Bandcamp? That's an easier way to get lossless downloads in an album form for us dinosaurs who still prefer albums. And lossless.

How do you approach making background music for YouTube videos? Do you refrain from making some decisions musically as it might be too interesting and might detract from the videos? Is there a common goal/theme across your tracks? Are you consciously keeping all of the tracks around 2-3 minutes or is that a requirement of the platform? Are there sections of your track that you purposely make so that it's easy for content creators to loop to make longer tracks?

Barry Taft

How do you approach structure? Do you mix as you go or keep it rough while creating sounds and mix separately with a different headspace?

These are fucking stunning. Nice work, bruv!

Great stuff, Ben. My questions: besides your brain, what gear/software was primarily used? Mostly Eurorack?

Stujay

Ooh are you using The Gentleman on The Gentlemen?!

When recording, I use Ableton like a 4-track recorder. If I remember I set a tempo for convenient jediting, and mostly perform with 2 or 3 stereo mixes, fading in and out. Liberating not thinking about multi-tracking. Q: YT: Originally, did you submit, or did they approach you? If it’s a matter of subscriber tiers, I’m not interested. The amount of work you put in is formidable. Q: What kind of education did you have, generally and musically? I admire your eloquence. You talk tech faster than I can think. I know you are a family man, and I assume you are more complete in your generosity to them as you are with your subscribers. Q: Please say a bit about what your module does. Q: Do you ever seek modules out? I imagine you are inundated by review requests, and that is a big part of your income. But is your time spent fending those folks off, or do you ever seek modules for unpaid reviews?
