As I understand, the ball cannot be kicked per se...but players can use their feet to prevent the ball touching the floor and keeping it in play

SKAOG

LET'S GOO! If you enjoy Haikyu, i think there could be an argument to have a slot reserved for sports anime, so that you can go through all of the famous sports anime like Hajime no Ippo, Megalo Box etc., because if you're fine with most sports as long s they have good story telling, there's plenty of good sports anime

SKAOG

9:10 Karasu in Karasuno means "Crow". You'll see this trend of having meaningful names for all of the schools

Jet Man

Dang, having a student go to a teacher's house or teacher go to a student's house does seem draining. Maybe someday there will be an institution where both could meet. But alas, such an idea remains a dream 😔 EDIT: Apologies to everyone, but I was being facetious. I know these institutions exist.😅

Lixien

I believe it is allowed to be kicked, it's just not... optimal lol.

drumrolltonyreacts

I'm not sure you need to tell me everything that is going to be relevant later, as that is not a normal way to experience media. I know its not a spoiler, but it come off weird

SKAOG

it's insanely conventient to tutor stuff which doesn't have to be done in person such as maths or sciences, and simply using Zoom/Teams. Not having to commute is great, espeically when time is money in Tutoring.

Baka

Yep, using legs is fine, you can even use your head or chest. It all counts as a ball contact. All fair play as long as the ball doesn't touch the ground and doesn't go over three ball contacts. It might be suboptimal, but sometimes you just don't have any choice.

SKAOG

ahhh, fair enough, you'll likely forget it anyway, but i'll dellete them and not do that anymore, been hyped to rewatch this again

Lixien

I'm reading about it and apparently some leagues ban it because of safety, some beginners may injure someone trying to kick it. (Straight up kicking it, not reaching the ball with your feet) But yeah, it is totally allowed.

Lixien

Btw, if you didn't know already Haikyuu is literally the japanese word for "Volleyball". It's just not really used nowadays because they use the english loan word for it. So yeah, the show is literally called Volleyball, just using an old term lol.

komuro

Karasuno (烏野) literally means 'field of crows' in Japanese. That's why the Karasuno High School volleyball team is often symbolized as crows throughout the series.

Arsenic805

Yeah, legs and pretty much any part of your body can be used to prevent the ball from touching the floor. You can also use legs and such to hit, but hands/arms are the most optimal obviously as you need to be able to extend and reach over the net and cover your perimeter. And of course to be more accurate. I like seeing it as the floor is lava for the ball, use any means to not let it touch the ground

Alanin_8💜

You can use any part of your body to prevent the ball from touching the ground, it's just that hands and arms are obviously the best

Drow1270

Damn only 2 episodes a week for this is rough, this is so good I can't wait for more episodes of this.

Drow1270

Yeah just saying I wish it was more frequent. I've only heard good things about this anime and it's replacing Demon Slayer which I didn't like at all for many reasons.

Arian Abdolahy

It’s technically a minor spoiler, since one doesn’t know how the other schools will be named and if there will be a trend or not. Don’t take away the surprise. 😁

ExperiencePoints

From what I heard, the impact of Haikyuu just as a manga and show had a big impact on volleyball in Japan. Like the number of students signing up for volleyball saw a huge increase in just a few years from it.

Red Menace

ya most sports anime have a similar "flow"/progression, super love it, but you either have the hidden unknown genius, or the guppy. Also kids having the keys, at least trusted ones, especially in a rural town like they are, is not unheard of, the kids clean the school at the end of the day, the kids are responsible for moving papers and stuff, schools even have the right to tell you whether or not you are allowed to date, there was a thing where a student got expelled for dating. not a spoiler but they are in a small town outside of sendai, which is like saying a small town outside a small-mid size city.

Red Menace

really? my mom was a special ed teacher, and she did after school tutoring, didn't get anything like that, maybe im not understanding, where you like a private teacher outside school is what you were saying?

SKAOG

ah shit, that's true, just that at the time of writing i thought that it would be expected that if one school has this quirk, it would probably be present in others.

SKAOG

Kicking it like Blue Lock or Inazuma Eleven is probably against the spirit of the sport.

drumrolltonyreacts

LOL uh huh.... Nobody in 2025 is giving keys to students. There is so much liability attached to that I grew up in a TINY ass town and that wouldn't have happened even in the 90s

drumrolltonyreacts

@RED, What I referenced in this episode was the amount of time that I taught OUTSIDE of school hours in addition to my contract as a teacher. Most musicians that do teach actually dont teach in a public school, but have their own private studio. I had both for a long time and there were years where I had one or the other and a combo of the two. I don't miss driving around everywhere. In the years that I was full time high school teacher I would still use the band room to teach studio lessons even though it was not allowed. As I got older I def 'bucked the system' on rules like that. The era of me driving all over cities to students was when I was really young and took all the work I could get because... I needed to pay rent and have things like.. .food

Japanese schools are VERY different to American schools lol

Red Menace

@drumrolltony, like @isaac said, in japan they teach and have very, VERY different rules to america, in america, 100%, no keys, in japan, yes, they wouldn't give it to first years, or to trouble kids, but yes they would give them, they generally have them hanging in a main office, which is more often than not unlocked. and tbc we are talking about HIGH SCHOOL, not elemeneray or junior. In japan high school is not required, they got to high school from age 15-18, 3 years, basically grades 10-12, and as i said, the schools have an absurd amount of control over students(at least from a western perspective) students act as janitors, obv students don't have as much power as alot of anime show(the student council is not god LOL) but they have more power than the american equivalent. This link is very top level but gives you a good picture: https://www.ciee.org/go-abroad/high-school-study-abroad/semester/blog/top-6-differences-between-japanese-high-schools-and-american-high-schools

Arian Abdolahy

Japan is just built different Tony "And it happens at airports all around the world - but apparently not at one particular airport in Japan. Kansai International Airport claims it has never lost a single piece of luggage since it opened 30 years ago. "

Arian Abdolahy

Yeah :) If you rcognize it, learn from it and can be honest about it, then it has served its purpose. And you didn't intend to spoil and it wasn't an important plot point. Can't tell you how much of a pain in the ass the people on reddit can be, when you point out spoilers.

drumrolltonyreacts

Until someone that attended high school in Japan tells me that the adults handed them keys to a building to enter at any time they wanted to.... I'm not buying in because... logic of adolescent behavior.

Red Menace

there are many sources showing the autonomy of students, you don't need to believe me on this lol. also noone said that teachers handed them keys to have as their own set to just have to enter at any time they wanted to, as i said, they hang in a central office(typically), and the (trusted) student would go up there take the keys, and open the gym, again in the context of the show it was 5am, and then students would return the keys to said office/teacher at the end of the day.

Inosek

''Where are the adults?'' well, they usually dont exist in anime, especially sports shows

Red Menace

lol, thats the chile flag, the texas flag has the blue with the star go from top to bottom on the left, though again, unless you know most make that mistake. hell even ive made the mistake in the past LMAO

Red Menace

yup, im familiar, had it happen to me too, and being from texas, and knowing someone from chile, trust me, you wont hear the end of it lol, because tech the chile flag came first

SKAOG

I definitely would never give major spoilers, intentional or otherwise, and yeah, people on the internet assume a defensive stance by default and always assume they're right, especially on Reddit.

K

I’m already loving ur reaction! I know you’ll be enjoying this one for sure!

Arian Abdolahy

Damn, are teachers so badly paid in the US? Jesus... And what made you drive to the students houses for so long? 😂 Were you trying to be extra nice or were you just desperate for the money? 😁 Yeah, but you should've told that student that he could get your highest tear in Patreon and get one lesson a month 😂 plus some anime alignment checks.

Jarrod Davies

I can speak a little about Japanese school culture since I teach English in Japanese schools. Students, especially in highschool have a lot free relm in clubs. The teachers generally only act as coaches or observers in club activities. Students have a lot of autonomy to help build leadership skills etc.. so students - - especially 3rd graders -- have a lot of control and freedom to sign out keys for the gym or club rooms.

drumrolltonyreacts

The bliss of a different healthcare system, I guess. Nobody is liable if a student lets themselves and friends into a gym and they break an arm messing around. What a world! LOL wish we had that here
