These recommendations have been very weird recently. Definitely not mainstream at all. Just like Eminence it's not an anime for someone who hasn't watched anime for years and years or at least watched a ton of genres. I watched this a long time ago and I wasn't a fan but I did finish it. If you know the tropes and you've seen other genres then a lot of references and scenes make a lot more sense

Interesting hearing this in the original Japanese, as it's one I usually watch dubbed... But either way I'm glad you're giving it a shot! There's not too much to say other than that this was an extremely influential and... /important/ anime of its time, and you're asking all the right WTF questions right now a first-time viewer in 2011 would have. Aside from the psychedelic art style, music starts to become thematically relevant as well later which is kind of up your alley. (Also, the ED is worth a listen/watch as time goes on.)

Yepppp for sure. That is the potential backfire when I trust everyone enough to let them vote titles on. Sometimes its killer and sometimes people just vote for themselves vs the vibe of the creator

Exactly yeah. I usually vote for what the creator would like + like 30% of what I would like because sub is part support part what I like to see. That's why I've been surprised about the recent recommendations. Something more grown up or serious is definitely more to your taste, not a show about Magical Girls lol. Even a romance anime is more suited hahaha

Madoka is just as grown up and serious as any other show, it just has the external wrapping of something more saccharine and childish. That being said, it's totally fine to not vibe with that exterior and completely reasonable to drop a show for that reason.

Yeah but I'm not comparing who is more mainstream. If you read I said it's not for people who hasn't seen a lot of anime. Also it was mainstream on a time where there were other series like it coming it, so you could've gotten used to it. Now we don't get series like that so if you watch it now it feels weird and out of place.

Oh I misunderstood when you said the recommendations have been less mainstream. This show has a bigger following than most on the poll, that's what I meant, I wasn't saying popular=better, just saying you'd be surprised how mainstream this show it

Also, if it's not clear to people who haven't seen the show, what it's referencing is shows like Sailor Moon. The most surface level summary of it is gritty Sailor Moon

I agree the opening is sus. It's referencing transformation sequences from older shows like Sailor moon, but in those shows the characters aren't like 4 feet tall.

Ahhh.... Just saw in your update that you decided to drop it. Definitely understandable. In some ways, you're a victim of a too-effective marketing stunt: The show essentially codified what now gets referred to as the "dark 'magical girl' genre", but for maximal sucker-punch effect they promoted it as if it was the most cloying and sweet magical girl show they could... until it gets dark with that gut punch, and then basically just keeps getting darker. Arguably was laid on a bit too thick (such that they hid the names of some of the more famous creators in the credits until later). Still, certainly not for everyone!
