Yeahhhhhh.....It was easier for me just to talk about it vs type it.My thoughts at the end of the ep

I didn't watch this entire video, I had a feeling you wouldn't like this one, so despite being the most interested in it out of the other options I didn't vote for it. I last watched it many years ago when I was younger so my memory of it isn't great. I will say it gets darker as time goes on without getting into specifics. But idk if thats helps your problems with it at all

Kevin Wang

LOL i still have no idea how this beat the other options for that poll.

Dario Lizardisilva

So when's the next magical girls anime gonna be suggested/voted? Lol Good reasons for you to drop this as soon as not vibing with it, specially after watching your Eminence in the whatever dark arts reaction. Keep it real 🫡😎

Neco

Sometimes it's hard to know what people's tastes will be like. For example, Vinland Saga is my all-time favorite show, and one this is also in my top 10. I was surprised you liked some of the Ecchi anime stuff like High School of the Dead and even Konosuba and Madoka is only sussy in the OP so that aspect didn't even cross my mind. However the tone of the show itself definitely isn't your thing when I thought about it more. The reason it's so highly regarded is that the plot becomes a lot more complex and nuanced, it's not just them fighting witches and rinse and repeat. There are some pretty great emotional beats later on in the show. But glad you are honest and can just drop things if you don't like them. More reactors should do that tbh. Personally I'm just glad you are liking Rock Ladies haha

Unbeknownst Man

"This is just... extremely not for me". I truly believe that summarizes the entirety of the disparities you've had between the recommendations that have landed with you or not. Some of us keep repeating to the others to try to consider "what you'd like to watch" vs "what they'd like you to watch" (The later being, I believe, what leads us to shows like this one), but it seems hard for some to reconcile those two things, because trust me, guys, if it were up to what I'd like, I would be recommending Tony shows like Gintama, Land of the Lustrous, Mushi-shi, etc. But we have to leave our personal bias aside and try to be more... "charitable" with Tony's already known preferences, if you will. The only show you didn't like that I still would defend is FMAB, but your reasoning for not liking it is perfectly understandable, the same way we all like/hate shows that others love/abhor. Good choice being straightforward and abandoning this show early enough, Tony. Many people bet on audiences getting hooked onto this show with episode 3, ironically enough... but I'm part of the ones who'd hazard a guess and say even that wouldn't carry it across the "show I like" line for you. Apologies for the testament. Now onto Castlevania! 😂

SimplySora

Even at 15/16 when I was discovering anime I didn’t make it past episode 1 lol But hey we simply re-roll and try again 👌

JoeyGuy7

I don't think it's that big of a deal to drop a show anyway. People wring their hands so much about us recommending shows you don't like, but if we listened to them we would have never had kaguya, konosuba, etc. So I think it's fine to recommend stuff that's out there and trust he will drop it if he hates it. Maybe cool it on magical girls tho lol

Jack Allen

If you guys keep throwing crap like this out at Tony it makes FMAB look a lot better. 🤣 Seriously though try to stay within the confines of what Tony has found interesting or genres he’s fond of. Again like one comment on this thread has said it’s fine to introduce some out there things that become a hit. I didn’t think Tony would like Konosuba that much heck i remember watching an ep as it aired thinking “man Tony would never watch this” and look how wrong i was. But come on middle school magical girls… plz. Again like Tony said do people go and actually see what middle schoolers look like. As someone who knows people at church or through parents friends it’s kinda hella weird and creepy that this is what’s being portrayed. I get it different cultures or whatever but still. Anyway chat over. Looking forward to Castlevania and I’ve been shouting from the rooftops that Tony would love Shangri La so maybe heed my advice fellow patrons. Thanks for listening

brandon

First off, I'm always in favor of a reactor dropping a show if they're not into it. I think everyone wants you to have a good time. That said, I am sympathetic to the people who voted for this because it's very hard to explain what's good about this show without going into massive spoilers, so like, their hands are kinda tied.

Roosp

Having taught middle and high school, this is a no go for me. My first job was teaching music for all grades at a K-8 school. I dunno, maybe it hits different when you spend time around that age group as an adult. Girls that are supposed to be middle schoolers, but are drawn to look like elementary school kids and talk and sound like elementary school kids, especially with those visuals in the opening, is a no go for me. I figured it would be the same for you, too. Also, these multiple scenes of a group of girls sitting/standing around talking cutesy like that for minutes at a time seems far from of what you seem to like best. I do think it's people voting for what they like really without considering what you would like. I'm honestly surprised you made it past episode 1 - It was hard for me to get through both episodes.

Halo S

There is a reason the anime was voted on - i am usually quite repulsed by this type of anime, yet i did enjoy it. That said, I completely understand why you aren't into it because i typically wouldnt be either

Neco

Nah, reactors are better when they are open to pushing the boundaries of what genres they react to. There's nothing wrong with trying something different and dropping it. Also Madoka isn't "crap", it's an amazing show with an emotional and nuanced story, fantastic visuals and a god tier OST, BUT it's not for everyone and that's ok. And I agree the OP has some sussy visuals but personally anime drawings are so far removed from looking realistic that I can easily just look past it, especially when the show outside of that isn't perverted at all.

drumrolltonyreacts

I knew you would get it. Teaching MS is like... makes this type of stuff super weird

Vasiliy5511

I won’t lie - I figured this would get the most interesting reaction, even if it turned out to be a negative one (and honestly, I expected it to be). Even though I like all the other shows in the poll more, when it comes to reactions, I sometimes tend to lean toward picking something completely new and unusual over a solid, familiar “safe” show. Even if I expect a negative result, there’s always a chance it might be a surprising hit. And for me, even just a couple of episodes of something fresh and unexpected for reaction are more interesting than 12–24 episodes of a decent but familiar old show. There’s already a mountain of excellent, more conventional shows out there that get positive reaction - and there will be more. New ones keep coming out all the time, and there’s no shortage of older “safe” masterpieces either. But sometimes, it’s fun to throw in something like this. I get the feeling that something like a new Takopi, for example, could totally hit Tony in the heart - or at the very least, it won’t leave him indifferent. But sometimes, I just want to go for "offbeat" titles like Madoka. But I was surprised by the result too. I think it's because the votes for the remaining three shows got split, and everything that could have gone to Madoka ended up going there, since it stood apart from the rest.

GardeninTool

Im not gonna hide it. I voted for this anime for several reasons thinking it had a good chance that Tony would like it after he completes the 3 episode rule. First was that, like others have implied, there's signs of a darker plot, theme and tones underlying the cute exterior. With some of the twists well foreshadowed surrounding the theme of the consequences involving the selfish wishes of young girls who dont know any better. Second, the score in anime is great with solid musical writing, especially when the plot tones are in a very dark mood and can even go into overdrive during the combat scenes. Third, albeit my weakest reason. Tony was on a hot streak with genres of anime that aren't collectively liked amongst the mainstream (kaguya, HS DxD, Prison School, Konosuba). And I figured this could also be a worthy...I guess you can say, experiment. So thats my bad. Even though this was a drop and Im a little sad it didnt make the cut. Im happy Tony decided to cut it before we got too deep. No hesitation to drop it and move on. Because at the end of the day, if our host cant enjoy it. We cant either. I still think youre one of the best reactors our there with some of the best catalog of shows available. And will continue to stick around.

Tauren Rogue

time to think what tony would actually enjoy vs your fav shows guys.

Tan11

Because it's considered kind of an all-time classic anime that redefined its genre and attracted a large audience of people that aren't into "normal" magical girl series at all. Being a classic does not of course mean everyone will like it, lol, I've failed to get into plenty of "classics" myself. I do kinda wish Tony had at least seen episode 3 to get a hint of why so many people (even some that don't like this genre in general) love this show, but some of the things he couldn't stomach (like the voices and age of the characters) wouldn't have changed anyway, so this is honestly for the best.

Tauren Rogue

the reason its voted is that the viewers like it not thinking at all what tony would like. the second i saw the poll not even with results i said to myself this is the worst one on the list for tony

Halo S

Yea like if it were me giving my personal preference of anime, Madoka wins. But I voted for black lagoon cause i figured it would make more sense

Tan11

A little sad you didn't get quite far enough to see at least a little of why this show is such a cult classic even among non-magical girl fans, but your main reasons for dropping it aren't things would have changed later anyway, so it's totally understandable.

S

I normally don’t judge a book (or anime) by its cover, but when I saw the poster of this series I kinda felt Tony wouldn’t go for characters that were so young, even if the story was great. Recently viewers have been making a big deal out of reactors dropping shows. Like all the big drama over some viewers not continuing Lord of Mysteries because of how complex it can get for some.

Tan11

I totally get that in theory, and I would probably have the same problem if the young characters were depicted in a more grounded, close-to-life way and/or the actual story content was heavily questionable (e.g. I do get the ick from Made in Abyss nowadays despite enjoying it years ago as a teenager and still finding some aspects of it very cool). But with stories as out-there and heavily-stylized as this one, I guess my brain just doesn't register these extremely un-grounded characters as existing in the same category as real middle schoolers whatsoever. Just like I don't watch JoJo's and register Jotaro Kujo as being in remotely the same conceptual category as a real 17 year old boy. Also ngl I didn't remember this OP at all because it's been many years and I often skip them after one listen, and yeah that shit's sus, though there's nothing like that in the actual show strangely, so I dunno wtf the animators were smoking when they threw that in.

Tauren Rogue

you missed the whole point but thats okay

Fuji Nami

https://i.imgur.com/4RRYPXq.png I made a little guide for everyone. Just for reference my favorite anime of all time is Perfect Blue. I love Tatami Galaxy, Texhnolyze, Lain, Paranoia Agent. Even my profile picture is from the Evangelion manga but I know he won't like it. I absolutely hate Btooom! and Kakegurui but this isn't for me lol. There's S tier anime in every rank. He will probably like more than half the anime in 'unsure' but I'm unsure which. Also the site I used only had a handful to choose from, there's a bunch more out there he will love that I didn't add in cause I'm lazy. *argh looking back i should have ranked Nana lower, I put it that high cause it's music focused but it's centralized around the drama between characters

Tan11

I don't think you need to worry about any more magical girl shows at least, this is for sure the only one of those that was ever likely to make it onto a poll.

Emil Haag

thats why black lagoon (dubbed or subbed) would be such a banger

Emil Haag

full send Black Lagoon or Golden Kamuy and youre in for a good time

hihelloevery1

I feel like alot of these anime he would easily like just as quick as he would easily dislike. alot of them dont have super obvious extreme turn offs like madoka magica has.

Neco

Eh, most of these are tossups imo. But Made in Abyss should be an absolute no considering Madoka made him uncomfortable and Made in Abyss has some (brief) perverted moments that are 10000x worse than anything in Madoka.

Hermit

Why do you think Mushishi wouldn't make the cut?

Hermit

I wonder if we'd still be here today if Tony's first anime experience was Madoka 😂

Sophia Dillon

Praying you've conjured Baccano! into consideration with this.

Fuji Nami

@Neco Made in Abyss is tough to stomach and has unforgivable stuff. It's a deal breaker for sure and some people want this show gone for good and I'm on their side (i actually dropped it). However, if you skip several scenes or omit entire episodes, the animation is stellar, music is fantastic (oh my god the music is so good), the fantasy setting, the horror, and the monster designs are all beyond good. It cannot be compared to Madoka other than one or two aspects (child-like perspective in a dark world and the mysterious nature), the quality gap between Madoka and Made in Abyss is huge. If Made in Abyss was redone to remove these depraved scenes it would be loved by all but it's too late now. I wouldn't be surprised if it got canceled. I think it's where it should be lol. But yea do not put anything below 'unsure' up for a vote.

Neco

All of the things you liked about Made in Abyss are similarly true for Madoka Magica. He didn't like the characters being middle schoolers, and Made in Abyss characters look just as young, if not more, and have some actually perverted scenes unlike Madoka where it's really just a brief moment in the OP visuals.

P_ateric

Castlevania Lets go!

JoeyGuy7

LOL this is what I was talking about with all the fretting about what he will like or not. I'm sorry but just having a random guy be like "hey here's what this guy ive never met will like" is so funny to me. Why are you the guy to decide??

JoeyGuy7

Sorry for the rant but I don't want this being dropped used as en excuse for commenters to shout down anything that isn't shonen action slop from the polls

Fuji Nami

@JoeyGuy7 Weren't you the person that wrongly gave me flack for me saying what was obviously going to happen? You're not on the correct side here.. I also rated some shonens highly..? I think he will like Gachiakuta so far also if it was included on the site i used. * https://i.imgur.com/qAvpyFt.png Yeah, hold me accountable now that it's over.

JoeyGuy7

I remember you crashing out about kaguya being on the poll, where you ended up being wrong. My point is that you shouldn't assume that your opinions align exactly with Tony's, it's OK for the polls to be wrong sometimes, or else he will just watch the obvious big shounens.

JoeyGuy7

And the fact that you think made in abyss is even remotely tolerable here shows that your tastes don't align as closely as you think lol, that show is actual pedo shit

Fuji Nami

@Neco What no. Madoka has alright j-pop and osts but it cannot be compared to Penkin's amazing music in Made in Abyss. Don't get this wrong. I know taste is subjective and to each to their own. I agree young characters is a -1 and I did factor that in but it's the depravity that's the deal breaker. He wouldn't have given Madoka a chance to begin with if young characters was an instant no . We both agree Tony and everyone else should not give Made in Abyss a chance, this isn't about him at this point.

JoeyGuy7

All I'm saying is you should say "hey here are some of my favorite shows that I think he will like" instead of "here's a guide I made of his definitive tastes and DO NOT vote on the other ones". Just let the polls follow what people ask for and chill a bit man, the good shows will be kept and the bad shows will be dropped.

Unbeknownst Man

I don't think it wouldn't make the cut, I'm saying that I would've pushed for it since day 1 if I wanted him to watch "what I like above everything else" without considering the bias of what Tony has liked or what he's currently watching. I believe there's a time and place for most shows, and Mushi-shi could get its time to shine eventually, but not after Samurai Champloo and when there's other "calm, deep shows" on the current rotation. Or, for example, and contrary to other people's takes, I proposed Konosuba and supported shows like Kaguya and virtually everything Tony has watched (even FMAB that he didn't like). I just follow the "current tendencies" and slowly learn Tony's preferences. Let's keep proposing new shows, but also "read the room" when thinking what he'd like, because there's a reason shows like Madoka, Kill Las Kill and Re:Zero get majority votes, and no one is preparing a raid, we just wait and see if Tony will drop those kinds of shows or not. Apologies for rambling so much. I like trying to be as clear as possible, that leads to many tl;dr comments 😅

Fuji Nami

I actually enjoyed Love is War a little bit (it just got really repetitive later on), I probably would have preferred something better that was in the polls at the time. That chart isn't reflective of my taste at all, as I said my favorite anime Perfect Blue I put near the bottom along with Made in Abyss which is far from my favorite. Him liking Love is War did surprise me along with Demon Slayer but I don't think I said he would drop it. I am right more often than I am wrong. Even before this list, I predict he's going to like Castlevania hold me accountable again. *If one of the top ones in my chart happens to win, hold me super accountable.

James

I’m just waiting for Gits to appear this channel. This anime actually had a much bigger influence on media than AoT.

Alesta

This is actually one of my favourite anime ever

ScaringCrows

Dang was at least hoping we'd make it to the plot twist, that sucks

TheGoblerTrainsMovinIn

btw the so called "insane twist" in ep 3 that everyone keeps hyping is literally just a single character death

Tan11

I mean that's the first big twist of the show yeah, but hardly the last one. Not that it matters when his biggest problems with the show were things that don't change later anyway.

kinetic98

Tony's biggest nightmare: Pieyon (Oshi No Ko) teaming up with Madoka magica girls and keyboardist from Rock is a lady's modesty (talking to the doll). Competing for the highest pitched voice lol

Rem is best waifu

I knew this would be dropped, I figured he would like Black Lagoon

Levi Blair

Yeah honestly it's way less the scene itself and more the context of the show that makes it "insane". Basically the show was advertised as a somewhat typical magical girl series with some big names from the space behind it and they hid that Gen "the butcher" Urobuchi (famous for brutal but great writing like saya no uta and later psycho pass) was a writer for it and only revealed it after the complete tone switch in episode 3 onwards. So the bait and switch shock value of a girl getting her head bitten off and then eaten plus it's later themes getting way darker in a genre still almost entirely aimed at young to teenage girls was the impactful part of it rather than the scene itself in isolation. They even aired it on a kids weekend slot and it went on to heavily influence and basically define the dark magical girl genre. Again not exactly crazy when watching without context and especially if the genre isn't your thing but the context and influence of it does add a lot if your into that sort of thing. Regardless I was almost positive this show wouldn't be your jam especially the first 3 episodes. Hopefully the next pick works out better.

Luxie

Brother. It’s insane because of the context of the show. Magical Girl shows were NEVER like this before. It was extremely foundational. And it gets way more crazy and fucked up than just “one death”. But whatever. I know people here love to act like media snobs while not actually knowing anything. At least Castlevania is what replaced it, it’s so predictably Tony’s thing and fun to watch if nothing else.
