I wonder how long the ball boy arc is going to last

14:40 the soundtrack is good 👍

When it comes to feeling like it's a setback for Hinata, most of his improvement has come mostly in his spiking and chemistry with Kageyama during the previous seasons. His receiving, blocking, serving, court vision, etc. is all still mediocre at best. So an opportunity, or rather forced opportunity, to watch from the sidelines and take everything in could really have a huge payoff.

Yeah to add to this, keep in mind that it's only been 8 months of time since Hinata joined the team and started getting coached for the first time. They're such an offense focused team that he's been able to get away with being nearly useless on defense up to now, but they'll be playing even more skilled teams when they go to nationals. I think you can argue that addressing it through him being a ball boy is a bit of a slow narrative technique though.

I definitely think the fact that Hinata’s the main character means his proficiencies and skills have been exaggerated while his fundamentals (the things we’ve been told us he apparently sucks at) have been downplayed. So yeah I think the “regression” you’re seeing simply has to do with the method of storytelling. Realistically though, this is what someone as green as Hinata would look like.

That being said I learned to love the ball boy arc later on because it arguably has some of the best ROI for Hinata in the entire series. Don’t know if this music analogy would work, but I see Hinata as somene who jumped into playing an instrument all of a sudden and had some innate talent and plenty of drive to help him get by. But the ball boy arc is him finally taking a music theory class to help him integrate everything.

I think thats the general idea is to show that Hinata isn't great at volleyball yet. He is good at one thing which he needs his team to do. He is growing his own individual strength as a player now

All of Hinata's fundamentals are very low level like receiving, serving, blocking, and etc. We've only seen him improve his quicks and chemistry with Kageyama with a bit of improvement in smaller aspects as well like tempo. Honestly if Karasuno wasn't an offense focused team then Hinata would not be in the starting lineup until he got the rest of his skills up to par. I quite enjoyed the ball boy arc even in the manga as it showed a new side of Hinata and for him to grow as an individual player.

The truth is Hinata sucks at volleyball. As you always say, funadmentals!

Yea the step back is definitely purposeful because Kageyama has been telling him since they started bonding that he sucks at various different aspects of the game or gets lucky. His receiving/vision has never been touched on so when he said this episode that he only chases the ball it’s so true. With him being the main character and them having won against Shiratorizawa we end up with this notion that “No, Hinata’s a good player” when in reality he’s very good at the position he’s in, spiking and being a decoy, but here’s him branching out to become better at basics.

Tsukki doesn’t like it because, aside from the initial embarrassment, he always sees Hinata working hard and kinda doing too much from his perspective. So he feels like he’s not doing enough in comparison and should be working harder.

This ball boy arc is definitely my least favorite moment of Haikyuu, however, the second part of 4th season is just pure peak
