Tanigaki is not Asirpa's uncle, I guess because he was playing with her cousin and in Ainu clothes he may have gotten it mixed up? Also I agree that those Binoculars should not have stopped that bullet lol, maybe change trajectory? but again that is a Rifle used to hunt bears so I highly doubt that he could just get up and walk away after as if nothing happened lol normally anyways

Ya Tanigaki isn’t Asirpa’s uncle. When he goes “oh you’re…” sugimoto grabs his knife because he thinks he recognized Tanigaki from the 7th which would mean he did know Tsurumi. But then it’s played off as a joke with him mistaking Tanigaki for Asirpa’s uncle

Trowa

Its because Sugimoto was worried about my guy recognizing Tanigaki from the 7th. If he did, that means he was from the same segment of the 7th with Tsurumi and thus he lied to them. So they lied and said he was related to her.

Cswerve

It’s definitely an actual mixup rather than an intentional lie, it’s just for comedic effect

This show is one of my favorites but it's been a while since i've seen these early episodes. I think 10 episodes in and you really start to get the feel for how engaging all the characters are. Like Tanigaki seems like just another goon when you first meet him and he really starts to grow on you. The whole show is like that, just a tremendous job with the characterizations.

The voice actor who sounds familiar is Mr. Brown in S;G and Kaburagi in Oshi no ko

Binoculars around 1900 were typically made of metal so I don't think it's too crazy that a piece of solid metal stopped that bullet from being lethal. Plastics weren't used in manufacturing really until decades later. Also Hijikata (old samurai man) here mentions that Asirpa's father is Ainu but not from Japan, and in the previous episode when he was holding Asirpa he mentions her blue eyes with some green in them, that perhaps she has some russian blood in her, and then mentions that he knows someone with the same kind of eyes. Suddenly the screen then cut to Nopperabo in the prison for a brief moment. Tsurumi also mentioned (while he was cutting Nikaidou's ear off) that the Ainu have a punishment that involves removing the ears and nose and then banishing you.

Bro... its a rifle. Binoculars from the early 1900s would almost certainly not stop a rifle bullet. Here’s why, briefly: Materials: Early binoculars were mostly brass or thin steel housings with glass prisms and lenses. None of that was designed for ballistic resistance. Thickness: The metal casing was thin. Even modern steel of similar thickness won’t stop rifle rounds. Rifle energy: Common rifle cartridges (even early 20th-century ones like .30-06 or 7.92×57) carry 2,500–3,500 joules of energy. That’s orders of magnitude beyond what binocular construction could absorb. Glass doesn’t help: The internal glass would shatter instantly and offers essentially no stopping power against high-velocity rounds. Edge case At extreme long range, with a severely slowed bullet, maybe it could deflect or partially fragment it, but that would be luck, not design. It would not be dependable protection. Bottom line Old binoculars are a movie trope, not real armor. They might stop fragments or pistol rounds under rare conditions, but rifle rounds? No.

Fair. In my mind I was thinking cause you said it might have plastic parts that the metal would make a reasonable difference, but suspension of disbelief has probably cooked my brain a little too much.
