The man at the start created the artificial dungeon, That man was Daedalus. The artificial dungeon is were the poachers use as base and route to smuggle monsters out of the dungeon with out being detected. Daedalus was a genius who worked with the gods right after they descended to the world. He helped them build Babel the tower that seals the dungeon and let adventures enter it. he went mad because as they explored the dungeon he realized that whatever he do it will never compere to the dungeon. So to make the dungeon less special he decided to create an artificial dungeon.

The graininess in the first few seconds of the show is to show that it was either a memory or something that happened in the past. Low resolution = old times or something. Some anime especially older ones tend to use this technique instead of "cloudy" or black&white effects that some do.

Through that obsession he ended up cursing himself and his entire bloodline. That's the little glowing D shaped icon on their eyes and keys.

Fun Fact- In Greek Mythology Daedalus was supposed to have created the maze on the island of Crete that housed the Minotaur that Theseus hunted. This maze was located in Knossos. He also had a nephew who's name might have been Perdix. Also, the God Ikelos (the one whose familia Dix is in per the anime) was sometimes referred to as the god of Nightmares.
