My understanding is that she survived the blast the same way that she survived all those shots that were intended for Weiss when she tackled him out of the way of that targeted attack. She has really high magic potential, and she has that extra powerful magic gem, so her shield is wayyyy stronger than the typical mage. She realized he was about to blow up so she likely had her barrier up at the last second

Also I know you've said you're not really interested in playing Dark Souls/Elden Ring but the same developer's mech game Armored Core 6 from a few years ago kind of plays a lot like the action in this. Super fast zipping around with bullets and energy projectiles flying all over the place. Very different genre but the closest action gameplay analogue I can think of

It seems to me that the force of the explosion would have been far greater had Anson not been subjected to such a barrage of attacks from Victoria and Tanya. Admittedly, this is a rather lazy argument on my part, but Tanya herself possesses a vast amount of magical power, and her defenses enabled her to withstand the self destruct

I like all the different types of flying equipment that each country's mages use. The Nordic people use skis, which seem to be faster and more maneuverable than the French horses. My guess is the French horses are more durable and can more easily maintain the same altitude for easier marksmanship. Haven't seen enough of the British brooms yet to figure out how they differ. The Germans just have a boot. If I had to guess, it's probably more difficult to use effectively than the others, but skilled users are much more maneuverable than the other types, and maneuverability is key in aerial fighting.
