Fast forward six months
After the initial visual research and exploration from Nico, Mattia & Mariska picked up the work done and started to finalize the logo and identity. By now it is more clear what One Army is and what its needs are. Hence making it easier to design a logo and identity for it.

In the beginning, we tried and struggled to include and continue with the legacy of the star. The star felt very similar to many other brands using asterisks or stars in their branding. Generally an overused symbol. Hard to stand out. Plus, learning from the experience with Precious Plastic, we wanted to include the name of the project in the logo itself to make it crystal clear. We wanted a logotype.

We then got back to the drawing board. Painting, sketching and cutting to create a friendly but professional, anti-institutional but trustworthy visual language for One Army. After hundreds of iterations, we landed on a cutout typographic approach that very much reminds of the punk movement Nico originally researched. This feels childish, fun, do-it-yourself and approachable while (once cleaned up) looking proper and professional.

While iterating through the typographic designs we felt the missing gap left by the absence of a symbol. A mark people could use independently. Without necessarily saying the name. Keeping it mysterious. Feeding the subculture. And that's when Mariska came up with a playful typographic approach that gave birth to a symbol resembling a person. An individual part of One Army? Walking towards a future they like to live in. This new mark could easily be used alone (on badges, caps, tees or even tattooed).

Ok, looots of visuals in the last couple of posts. You're probably overwhelmed. None of the above logos is final or set on stones yet. We're still working on them. But wanted to share them with you Patrons. Showing you a bit of the thought process behind creating the One Army logo, identity and visual language.

We would love to hear your thoughts, feedback and ideas on the work done so far in the comments below. This would help us greatly.

I think it works really well as both an overall identity and a stand alone symbol. I didn't see the resemblance to the cancer charities until you mentioned them because they all tend to use single colours. By having 2 colours and making the base of the 'A' look like feet you've made it much more unique. It looks great!

Love the simplicity, makes it very powerful. Tough challenge to stay away from negative war connotations. You managed it very nicely. I don't think the Ribbon parallel is too present. as mentioned the stick figure is clear due to the difference in colour. (Does the colour difference work for colourblind too?) The symbol actually reminded me of my favourite hiphop group A Tribe Called Quest, who also stand for unity of people. I'ts absolutely great seeing this process as a Designer, and honestly admiring your approach to stimulating community feeling. i've never seen such a high engagement before, keep on doing what you do!
