When our rich friend Hélène invited us to a luxurious restaurant, we were expecting to be actually "invited", and it turns out to be not the case.

I'm not sure how this can be confusing. I'm invited out to dinner all the time and have never expected my friends to pay for my meal. I always figured I was invited for my company.

Choosing an expensive restaurant that the other invitees might not have normally chosen based on budgets paints Helene as either tone deaf or naive....

@MCC, I disagree. Assuming some one else is paying for dinner, just because they invited you for your company, is still off to me. You should always be prepared to cover your side of the bill, even if you thought your invitees were paying.

This and I always have the option at the invite time to say that it's out of budget. Never had a problem like that.

I think in some European cultures, if you invite others out it’s customary that you pay. At least I remember having a discussion about it with someone.

Whenever I’m invited out to get a bite to eat, I always make sure I have enough to pay for myself in case the other person isn’t paying for me. Like for instance I went to a vegan soul food restaurant with a friend and I assumed we were paying separate until he said he’ll pay for me. He didn’t have to,but I appreciated the kind gesture. And by the way, the food was good and I’m no vegan by any means, but the food we had tasted so similar to actual meat that if you didn’t tell me that it was vegan, I wouldn’t have noticed.
