Service Dog Puppy (or any pup!) Socialization (Patreon)
Content
Hey Folks!
So you've seen Axel the guide dog puppy, being raised by my colleague Spencer, a few times on this channel:
Teaching an 8 Week Old GSD Puppy to Sit (Luring & Capturing): https://www.patreon.com/posts/teaching-8-week-97713778
Polite Greetings (CGC Prep): https://www.patreon.com/posts/polite-greetings-101234474
And in this video, Axel is 18 weeks old. We head to our local Cabela's store for a field trip that includes a variety of socialization activities.
Socialization is an important part of any young dog's life, but is especially important for young service dog prospects.
In today's exposure trip video I'll be showing you:
how to prep for a field trip/session
what things to consider within the session (location, timing etc.)
the types of things we want to socialize a young puppy to
how to increase or decrease the difficulty level for your puppy
how to end a session
Axel is not the most confident GSD puppy, and he's also not the least either. He falls somewhere in the middle. So we made deliberate choices about what we did that day (as we do with every individual). Example: we felt like riding the elevator would be too much for him that day, and we wouldn't have the chance to properly introduce it (slowly) because the store was too busy, so Spencer will save that for another day. However, he'd had introductions to stairs, people, dogs, crates, etc. before, so we were comfortable with seeing all of those things in a new environment.
Hopefully this gives you some ideas for your own socialization field trips!
