In this month's Patreon Deep Dive, we talked about how to run a dog training business. But what about the reverse: how do we choose the right dog trainer to work with us and our dog? What questions should I ask?

The dog training industry is completely unregulated. Anyone can say they are a dog trainer ...

and the outcome of this lack of regulation can be anything from 'totally fine' to downright dangerous for you and your dog.

In this video I'm going to talk about the qualifications you should look for to ensure that you and your dog are getting the training experience you deserve! From training methods and education, to experience and titles, we'll cover it all in this ultimate guide to choosing a trainer.

I'll even be discussing one of my own training failures and the important question you can ask to find the right trainer for you and your dog!

If you're in the market to get some professional help with your dog, you do not want to miss this video!

What does it take to be an AKC evaluator. Must one have dog training credentials. Why do some trainers teach AKC CGC but can’t give the test?

Melanie Wonneberger

Becoming an AKC CGC evaluator is relatively straightforward. Applicants need two years of experience working with dogs and their owners. The dogs should vary in breed, size, temperament, and energy levels. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. The process involves a small application fee and a test. Evaluators must renew their certification every two years, which also involves a small fee. Trainers may teach the CGC program without offering the testing component for various reasons. They might not be evaluators, possibly due to not maintaining good standing with the AKC, choosing not to support the AKC, not renewing their certification, or simply lacking interest in applying. It is best to ask the trainer directly for their specific reasons. https://www.akc.org/products-services/training-programs/canine-good-citizen/for-evaluators/evaluator-application/

Nope, it just doesn't make financial sense typically without a group of people to help out or a training facility. As a private trainer without a facility, not only would I have to find a place to do it, I'd have to bring all the equipment, and organize and potentially pay helpers. Most people expect to only pay around $30 dollars to take the test, and that simply does not cover the time and expense of having the test for a single person when the trainer could take on a client who would be paying their normal fee.

Stephen A

Thank you for breaking it all down for me. I thought in the beginning when looking for a trainer it was they weren’t qualified to give a test since they didn’t have credentials listed. That they only train dogs the basics So I went with a kennel club that does group classes with the test at end .

Do you have a list of trainers you recommend? Running out of time, effort and energy to do it myself

DOGGY•U

I don’t have a specific list, mostly because what I jive with with a trainer is likely different than what another person might. I also haven’t vetted trainers and feel uncomfortable making recommendations. That being said, a good place to start is to see if atlas assistance dogs had a trainer in your area, MD dogs for diabetic alert, Feywild dogs, Donna hill, and Blythe from delta tails. Hopefully that gives you a jumping off point!
