Hey Folks!

I'm starting to get some video of my work with Lyric, my dad's guide dog, while he recovers from surgery. Still figuring out the filming component, but hoping to get some more videos, including obstacle avoidance, taped in the next month (if the heat will let up for a few days!).

Enjoy this primer on country travel or shore-lining, depending on which guide school you talk to. AKA guide travel without sidewalks.

Happy Training!

Really cool demonstration of communication between dog and handler! I loved listening to the explanation and breakdown .

SLR_FL

Very interesting work! Thanks for sharing that, as I'd never seen it demonstrated!

Thanks Montana! I have a new video on obstacle avoidance coming out hopefully later this month :)

Thanks Shaana! I have a new video on obstacle avoidance coming out hopefully later this month with some more demo that should be kinda neat and helpful to those who also need leading tasks.

Glad you addressed Lyric’s perspective—was wondering about that. Must be discombobulating, the sudden change to her routine (likewise for your dad! :-( … ). It’s interesting how you use the GoPro angle to monitor performance while mimicking limited sight; also to learn how patterning applies to solving the training puzzle of non-urban travel. Nice of you to keep Lyric tuned, and create educational content from it—much appreciated! Please thank your dad for sharing Lyric, we wish him a very speedy recovery!

Great demonstration, I do country travel daily but need to stop my girl from walking on lawns for a sniff now and then. Would love to have her hold the curb like your service dog. You just motivated me

This is more of an advanced skill and taught at the end of guide dog training, once the dog has already mastered about 6 months of other skills

I just love watching and listening even if it’s not something I may need, I love learning anyway!!

Love this demo! I know I've said this many times before but I'm always amazed by guide dogs specifically. It truly shows how far training (and the right dog) can go!

Do you think using a target or several in a row to teach a straight line of travel and not to go off it would make sense? Or stick to patterning only using loose leash heel? My dog already knows forward, but not necessarily staying in a straight line…veers off when there are distractions or directional options (leading task not for blind handler)

DOGGY•U

You can definitely use targets to teach straightness. In general, it's a bit easier to use curbs long term, so starting with a front foot target to a flat piece of wood and then transferring that to the curb would probably the easiest way to do that. I will also use a nose target for things like finding doors, which can also help with straight approaches.

i really love that you’re able to check in with the original handler after you review footage! i love the breakdown of your teamwork, thanks for sharing!
