Hey Folks!

One of my passions outside of service dog training is definitely travel. And I've traveled a lot. I've been a Diamond member at Hilton for 6 years now I think? If that means anything to my fellow "travel for work"ers lol.

When I was on the road as a guide dog instructor and placement specialist, I lived in hotels for 2-6 weeks at a time, training clients in their hometowns. That means I've spent a lot of time traveling with dogs.

In this video, I'm going to give you my best tips and tricks for staying with your service dog at hotels and airbnbs. From how to book (I have separate recommendations for hotels vs. airbnb), to proper etiquette, to dealing with access issues, this video will cover it all.

Hilariously enough, I am actually travelling with my dog to a hotel tomorrow, and I was worried about him being rejected as a service dog, and this video came up... so naturally I had to pay the $7 for the month to watch it lol. Unfortunately, with the TERRIBLE reviews of the other hotels in the city, my only option was a non-pet friendly hotel for the first time. I have 2 forms, one from a doctor, one from a nurse practitioner, and I printed out the Ontario regulations, literally from the "Ontario Restaurant and Hotel Management Association". I'm worried because my friend already called ahead at a different hotel, and they claimed that they only allow service dogs in a room with a single king bed, and only on the first floor.... yeah.... no. Nice try - even though it was a pet friendly hotel! I'm travelling with my friend, so it's not like we're going to sleep in the same bed, just because you feel like being a **nt today (or grossly misinformed, I wasn't on the phone call, so I can't be certain, I'm just upset). Hopefully things go okay for us! My forms are the ones they filled out for the college - only because they needed that instead of a letter. But I figured since I have 2, it's better ammunition than 1. The other hotel also was asking about "ID", but in Ontario *only* guide dogs for the blind get "official" ID, and I think that's a part of the problem, when Ontario *allows* for owner trained service dogs! Deep breaths.... nothing is going to go wrong, so long as we go before the nightshift people show up (during the day at least managers are there, and generally better informed staff, I've found).

Leo, best luck and sure hope you’ll share how it went!

You got this! Knowing the legal rights and staying calm are always your best options. Good luck!

Preparation intimidating, but all your tips for no barking at triggers and good loose leash walking were LIFESAVERS at our trip last week. Lunged once at an iguana around sunrise was no biggie but always refreshing commands to get ready for any other travel! I hear from other handlers that doggy diarrhea (presumably from stress) was unavoidable but that tends to be with the pups in quieter, predictable households. So now I can even appreciate kid chaos as a training tool! Happy travels!
