With our hand touch coming along, I decided to combine his name recognition with a hand target. I'm a big fan of training a recall to hand because it gives the dog a physical cue, while also ensuring that they get close enough that you can grab collar in an emergency. Hand touch recalls also have clearer criteria for you and the dog.

Some months ago when I first learned it from you I started doing this closed-fist hand-touch for: putting on the harness; coming into position for grooming or tooth brushing; and as a general visual recall cue too (great for when we’re out on walks because it also brings focus—i.e. he can’t put his nose on my fist while at the same time looking over his shoulder for approaching dogs). It’s remarkable how it’s increased Trip’s response alacrity. Apparently it’s a fun game for him—he seems to react to the closed fist by thinking “Ha! I know this one!”, then running over to cash in. ;-D
