Starting dogs young on the equipment they will eventually wear, or just wearing things in general, is really important. The tough part is that Denver is also really mouthy. So, if I want to introduce the feeling of a vest without him focusing on ripping it off, I need to practice taking it on and off, and then once he's wearing it, immediately give him work to do. So here's Day 5 and 9 of training where I start him with a vest.

Note that the reason I use a different vest for the second part is that it's smaller and less fabric and hangy straps, meaning less for him to see out of the corner of his eye and mess with.

The tail is just nonstop!

I love his happiness, and the food drive! Oh man, the food drive!

DOGGY•U

Yes! The food drive is a major qualification for me! Makes training so much easier and enjoyable for everyone!

you posted a sociaization video of John Denver in a book store or something. I would like to send the video to his family. I can't find the video.

The way he looked at the vest after you took it off like 'OOH I BITE?' and then settled for halfway biting your leg while walking to the camera is so cute 😂 Absolutely just who he is as a dog, I love it 🥰

Kerri Jean

This is one of the cutest things I've ever seen. Good boy Denver!

Apologies if you've already talked about this in a different post, but (if not) would you mind expanding on your choice to have him wear a SDIT vest at this age? And what types of situations you have him wear it? I've read on SD training groups that having them wear it before public access training could risk souring the vest for them. This is my first SDIT so I'd love exposure to a different perspective :) Thank you so much for your content!

DOGGY•U

I don't have strong feelings either way on this one regarding when to vest. If I do have them wear the vest I am generally engaging them and actively training and not just having them wear it around unless there is body sensitivity issue. But I do feel it's important to introduce all gear (vest, boots, head collar, goggles) relatively young, even if you won't be using them right away.

I’m about to get my sd prospect and is it important for Denver to wear the harness at all times or just for training?

DOGGY•U

Hey Grace! He wears the harness whenever a leash is attached. It's on in most of my videos for ease of bringing him out to potty. He does not need to wear it all the time (and shouldn't in the crate) but because a young puppy might need to potty at any time, and wears a drag leash in the house, he wore it a lot as a puppy.
