Are you going to do any kind of discount on your classes for Black Friday?

Wiyan Wakan

Training goes according to what the dog can personally handle. They tend to let you know in my experience when they are done for the day.

Not over training. I've seen a guide dog burn out while in training from being pushed more then it was needed, and this was at a guide dog school. The dog litterly just stop working and refused to work period in the middle of a crossing. The training your doing is small fries compared to how they traing dogs at the school I went to.

Also, the current guide dog that I'm training is progressing perfectly. I am slowly adding more and more task and introducing him to new things as we go out and about during work and personal time. I can tell when he is more relax, as he will want to play when we are on a break time, such as I am filling up a drink machine, and he is supposed to be laying down, he will get in his head that he wants to play. Typical for a German Shep. Also useing the proper tools to train helps reduce how much time it takes to train for a situation as well. such as I can't use a chocker chain colar on him or a martin gal collar on him during while we are out and about, I have to use a pincher collar, and its removed after work while we are at home. He is currently 80LB about 20 to 30lb short of his full weight goal. He is a big boy, and folks always say so, plus lots of folks never seen a full blooded western solid Black GSD.

Hey Molly! Yes! Are yo on my mailing list? If not you can sign up at DOGGYU.com, as I sent out an email about it on Sunday. You can use code THANKS25 for 25% off either of the courses :) I'll try to make a post about it later today too for those that missed the email :)

Years ago when I was a volunteer puppy raiser with a program, the trainer said to keep sessions short, end on a good note, and always stop before the dog is ready to be done. That way what they remember next time is that they wanted to do more, not "oh, I was tired of doing that..." So incredibly key to happy training! That's the example you're giving to others, THANK YOU! I love the perspective of skills development rather than isolated tricks, I guess I'd call it. (As a side note, I took this advice to heart when homeschooling my kids too, and we all loved learning just that much more, LOL.)

Fantastic response!!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Laura, I get that training sessions need to be kept short, but what do you do when he’s actually working (not actively training)? For example: going to the mall. Do I really need to give mu dog a break to decompress every five minutes? Is there a way to build that up so that I can spend more than 5 minutes in a single store (using the mall example)?

Della Monroe

that commenter obviously don't know you. A classic example of engaging the mouth before the brain.

DOGGY•U

Short sessions are for training sessions, skill acquisition etc. For outings and fully trained SDs, you just need to build up time working slowly and be cognizant of your dog's needs.

I really appreciate this video. It's hard not to compare yourself to the curated videos online. This is a good reminder that where you are personally is okay and that working toward something at your own pace is what's needed. That you're already doing good by aiming to better yourself and learn by watching videos like this. I think even as novice trainers we can be hard on ourselves and not notice our incremental progress. THANK YOU FOR THIS

SLR_FL

Great response to someone that doesn't know you or your technical skill level and years of knowledge/skillset. Frankly, I think some folks are just jealous that they can't instinctively put a fabulous foundation on a pup like you can! BECAUSE of what you know, and BECAUSE of Denver's genetics, makes your video sessions look unbelievable!! As a horse Dressage trainer & an obedience dog trainer for most of my life (over 45 yrs), I'm a stickler for a good solid foundation. And there's a proper way to do that with positivity, without burning out the horse or dog. Being new to SD training, makes me ever so happy I was a stickler for proper foundation! Because stuff I teach now is coming so easy to my dog--and some internet nosey-Nelly might think I'm overdoing it too!! Wish we could tell people to just go kick rocks and ... "if ya can't say something nice, don't say it!" 😜 ... and bring your negativity offline, to the source, for clarification .. so ya don't look like a bee-otch! 🤪😂😂

DOGGY•U

Honestly, I also have thoughts about how I was further along with Osa at this age than I am with Denver, and I just remind myself to train the dog in front of me to my personal ability level at this time with the goals I have for this particular dog :)

DOGGY•U

haha yeah I wish I could tell people to keep their thoughts to themselves soemtimes but, nature of the beast lol! And yes - foundations is key - and Denver is just a super trainable dog. Most trainers get trainable dogs. And those highly trainable dogs can also be more challenging to live with than the average pet... LOL

Scott Perry

I have to be honest, it bothered me that someone was making those claims. You handled it really well. Thank you for your insight and to address this issue in a mature and calm manner! Ill get there some day lol
