While this session isn't super fancy, I wanted to point out a few things about it.

1) My setup: This is a modification you can make if you can't bend over. I pull up a chair, and use a platform to get the dog at my height. This is easier on my back and my knees.

2) What to do when the dog doesn't complete the behavior? You'll notice I present my hand for a hand touch and Denver is too busy chewing his cookie to comply. I didn't give him enough time! No worries, I take my hand away, and re-present it when he's done eating.

In this case, I didn't make the mistake of overdoing the session, and ended it successfully in under a minute. Short skill training sessions = generally better. I will say that my verbal markers seem just a fraction late. I think I'm faster with a clicker ...

And because people ask, this is the platform I use. But they're an investment, so a large ottoman can work just as well!

Happy Training Ya'll!

Your little puppy is awesome, and you guys doing such great videos. I got a dog about a year and we will start our journey to train to be a SD. This is my first SD-journey so we will see if I can do it right :) So my dog is not knowing all the details in the cue (what word is that? English is not my native language so I don't understand cue and protocol, sorry :) ) So my main question, is my dog to old to start a journey like this, can we start over with some that we see in your videos so we include all your great details in the commands? Or what is your suggestion?

Hi Pia! Your dog is not too old to get started if they have the correct temperament for service work. You can definitely start now! Cue just means the signal we give our dog to perform a behavior. In english "command" means "do this or else" which is not the relationship I promote here on this channel. We want to have a cooperative relationship with our dog, and not an authoritarian one. Hi Laura! I’m working with our new Aussie mix puppy to head towards becoming a migraine alert SD. I’m on the spectrum and have sensory issues with clicking noises - tried the clicker years ago with our old dog and couldn’t cope - my timing was awful and it drove me bananas. Can I possibly make this happen with verbal marking instead of the click? Thanks in advance!

The only thing I really believe does better with a clicker is engage/disengage game. Otherwise, verbal marker is typically totally fine. Clicker is better for a little cleaner/fine detail work. But most things can be accomplished with a verbal, and you'll notice I use a lot of verbal markers.
