A week or so ago I posted a video asking which of my two dogs I should bring into my therapy appointment with me, and more importantly, why?

With lots of different answers in the comments section, I thought it was worth a full-length video on this topic, along with some general advice regarding raising and training psychiatric service dogs and preparing them for medical appointments.

Trigger Warning: The first part of this video talks about my own experience with PTSD and medical trauma, including issues related to consent. If that's not something that's appropriate for you to listen to at this time, please skip to timestamp 5:46 of the video. <3

i hope this is okay to ask, after watching you talk about puppies exposure to negative experiences/emotions.. i have some questions do you have any recommendations to someone who has an older puppy who’s not that confident around upset, angry, crying, emotional outbursts? what can i do? he’s 10m now, should i completely avoid him when i feel that way? like go to another room? should i feed him treats and walk away? what can i do..? i had no idea that him being exposed to those experiences could cause more harm than good, i figure to ask.. i don’t have a sd trainer i can ask directly ty in advance..

Cathy

Thank you for asking this, I was pondering how to handle the high stress/high emotion times (with my next SDIT in the future) when it's unlikely I'll have help for those times.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! So, I wanted to ask, I have a 1.5 y.o. SDiT (owner training) who I just started taking to therapy with me (although he went a couple times when he was a puppy puppy just because he was small enough that he would just nap on me and also my therapist wanted to meet him 😂). I put off taking him for real for real, because I was concerned he wouldn’t be able to settle, but he’s been to two sessions now and has been an absolute champ. No tasking really, he just snuggles up on the couch next to me and observes (he’s a dobie so alwaaaaays watching)/sleeps. And then I take him for ice cream or a pup cup after. I guess my question is, do you think I’ve jumped the gun at 19 months? He is starting to do DPT without prompting at home but will also remove himself from the situation when he starts feeling overwhelmed and grab a toy and then come back and check in on me, and I always pair it with a treat (and lots of love of course). And if it’s not too early, at what point can I start asking him to task? I feel like the sessions right now are just sort of getting acclimated to the environment. But I don’t know when/how to transition to asking him to engage in the process. Thanks in advance! This has been one of my big question marks, so I’m so glad you made this vid!!

Sorry or the delayed reply! I think settling in therapy at 19 months if he's not showing signs of stress is totally fine! Once he's had several successful sessions observing, i think it's reasonable to ask for DPT in low-pressure scenarios (even when you maybe don't need it at that moment) for practice, and then once he's successful with that, begin using it in real scenarios. Between 18 and 24 months is when I start doing this sort of thing if the dog is ready. :)
