Hey Ya'll! Usually I try to get these to you ad-free the night before, but I just finished it this morning and I decided I'd rather try to get it out this week than wait. So it's ad-free for the next few hours at least :) Thanks for your understanding as I slowly try to get back into it <3

While flying back to Connecticut, my dad—who is blind and uses a guide dog—experienced a terrifying series of events when another dog, labeled as a service dog, repeatedly lunged and growled at his guide dog while boarding the plane. Shockingly, this happened three times, and the airline still allowed the aggressing dog to fly.

In this video, I break down:

  • What happened on that flight

  • The Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) and how the airline may have failed to follow it

  • The unique considerations for guide dog teams in public access situations

  • Why temperament and preparation are non-negotiable for service dogs flying

  • What may have been going on with the other dog and handler—and how you can avoid the same mistakes

Whether you’re a service dog handler, trainer, or simply an ally to the disability community, this video offers important insights on safety, responsibility, and access rights.

Safety should be priority! Stupid jargon resulting in a miserable experience for your family is unacceptable! Glad you’re on the right team and definitely using this as an opportunity to help us as always, you’re the best.

Maureen Watt

I really appreciate your frank review of this situation. That must have been particularly difficult because it involved a family member. Unfortunately this kind of situation happens occasionally. It shouldn’t ever happen.

Maureen Watt

It’s great to have carrier regulations regarding service dog travel. But if unenforceable in the moment by airline staff, it is meaningless!

Victoria Krzyzanowski

Maybe now I'll consider bringing an ACAA law card with me on flights! I had only ever considered ADA laws

Having been in this industry for a long time, I've seen a lot, and I have a lot of empathy for disabled individuals just trying to make it through the day, but when something like this happens where it directly impacts another team, it's really a problem.

Laura E. Barroso

I am surprised the airline allowed this dog to travel when he behaved repeatedly so aggressively. My service dog was not allowed to fly on Jet Blue because he barked at a chihuahua.

DOGGY•U

I am also surprised. The DOT guideline is: "Your service animal must behave properly. An animal that engages in disruptive behavior (ex. barking or snarling, running around, and/or jumping onto other passengers, etc. without being provoked) will not be accepted as a service animal." Obviously this dog did not meet criteria, specifically because it also could not be brought under control.

😱 .. now if that scared me and made my BP rise watching this video, I can only imagine how frightening it was for your Dad, AND Mom! Your Mom being there helped buffer-and fill in the blanks to your Dad, but still! Your Dad's mind had to have been racing as fast as his heart rate! The Airline TOTALLY handled that improperly. More training is needed in that area! Your Dad & Mom should have been compensated for the lack of knowledge on the part of the crew. That WAS dangerous! And the fact they put your Dad, and Lyric in harms way 3 TIMES is unconscionable!! So surprised that the other team got to continue on the flight! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Lastly, God bless Lyric. 🐾♥️ (And YOUR training of her!!)

I put off watching this video because even the idea of it makes me so uncomfortable. I am so sorry for your dad and Lyric. I am an owner-trainer of a border collie SD, and I feel for the Australian Shepherd’s owner. It takes immaculate care to work with their innate reactivity. We had a pitbull rush us in the same way, first at the gate and then after we boarded. I was so proud of my boy for being stoic. We’ve had lots of little dogs give us practice, but this was our first “big dog” and my boy made me so proud. The pitbull‘s owner was terribly apologetic and embarrassed. The flight attendants complimented our training. We made it through the short flight without issue and they let us get off first. It’s hard with getting this exposure on public transport, but Laura’s right…You’ve got to ride the bus a lot before even thinking about air travel. We also go to a nose work class as well as agility where all of the dogs are crated and there’s no interaction. I think it helps for dogs to be around dogs without interacting. My parents have a wonderfully reactive pet Aussie. Great companion, but I’d never want to be on a plane with him.

Late to the party. I can not believe they tried 3 times, can’t believe the airline let them fly. So so so glad ur dad and Lyric are ok. 🙏🏻

As an owner of a retired reactive bluetick coonhound SD, I can see both sides of this. I hope the other dog undergoes further training or retirement. My boy was rock solid until attacked by a sheltie, he was sleeping in a tuck position on a train when this happened and I knew the risk since dogs are allowed. The other owner was so upset with her dog and apologized a million times. But he did good for a year with constant training then was injured in a horrific event. So now I'm training a new puppy with professional help. I'm doing the basics. I don't want to go through this issue again. The event was he reacted to a tiny dog at petsmart, then falsely accused of biting the dog. Had video to prove he was innocent but the damage was done. He was reactivate again and I knew retirement was the only solution. So I understand if it was a SD, the hard decision to retire the dog and lose independence. He was a mobility SD and now I can't go anywhere without help. Wish nobody has to go through what happened to your dad and his lyric. Just wanted to give a different point of view and how I handled my situation.
