Stillness is a always challenging for an active puppy! In this video, I start training the "stand-stay" to Denver. This will be helpful down the line for the task of blocking (standing behind me to create space) but also useful for his future Rally Obedience competitions.
Stand-stays can be really hard because the dog wants to follow you around, and that's especially easy to do when already standing. To set Denver up for success, I use, you guessed it, platforms! I also use our bucket of treats in front of him as an environmental stillness cue to start him out.
Using the front foot target on top of the full body target helps keep him in position. Alternatively, you could use a front and rear foot target (separately) to start, but he didn't know a rear foot target at this time.
Over time you can fade the front foot target, and then the platform all together. Sometimes when I'm fading the full body platform, I temporarily use a piece of two by four as a front foot target to help with the transition.
