I recently had a short (of Denver retrieving his leash to hand) get a lot of attention on social media. Many people asked how they could get their dog to retrieve the leash for them.

Hint: It doesn't start with the leash. And as always: foundation skills matter!

In this week's video I explain how to train a leash retrieve, but more importantly, I talk about general retrieve pointers, regardless of item you're looking to teach your dog to retrieve. You'll also get to see how I'm making retrieving a crutch (big heavy awkward object) easier for Denver.

Happy Training!

Love this video topic. Thank you for making a in-depth video

Hello, thanks for your awesome detailed videos. I started out with carrying & retrieving a water bottle. My service dog likes to naturally carry water bottles, so I stemmed off that retrieval, as I knew she enjoyed it. We recently started working on the leash retrieval, which she does well at home & familiar surroundings but not so well in public. Any suggestions? She will carry objects in public but is hesitant to pick up from the floor. I probably missed a training step somewhere along my way…

Walter does a good job retrieving. One important retrieve is for my cane, which I use all the time but often falls on the ground. He tends to grab it’s by the handgrip but it’s seems uncomfortable sometimes as he is giving it to me because it can catch under his chin. I never thought of using a pool noodle. Do you shape the pool noodle retrieve on its own first and then add it to the cane? Thanks !

Yes! I cut it down to size and then shape the retrieve. Alternatively, if you wanted something more permanent, they make kayak decking that is like foam and grippy, or you could use like tennis handle wrap. You could keep that on all the time to make it easier for him.

Some thoughts - does it have to do with flooring - will she pick it up on carpet but not wood/tile? Does it have to do with the physical bending down - like will she do it from a stay when she's already on the ground? Will she pick it up from a low object but not the floor - ie. from a step? I'd mess around with different heights and textures and get soem more info about what specifically is bothering her about picking it up off the floor. And then barring any medical issues with bending down/flexing the neck, it will be easier to come up with a plan to split the more challenging behavior down.

How do you get them to switch from targeting (nose touch an object) to actually putting it in their mouth? I've tried a few things but not sure what to do next.

DOGGY•U

So there's a bit of trial and error and waiting them out. but if you have a dog that struggles if there's not immediate reinforcement, one little hack I'll use sometimes is to use a bully stick for a few clicks, and then switch back to the dowel that's the same size and shape.

Stóri is great and going out and coming back and bringing things to hand (especially toys and long lasting treats). The trouble I'm having is getting him to let go of the item or not chew it in my hand. It's like he's just showing it to me. Ha ha! I'm not really sure where to cut him off yet still reinforce. Even with wooden spoon and hold duration practise he immediately thinks chew or destroy once he gets his mouth on it. Any videos on or tricks for "release".
