So after showing you Chip's first session, I wanted to show you Pepper's second session. I literally worked with her the day before for two minutes. She already had a strong front foot target and some understanding of hind-end movement but hadn't been taught in this format with the shaping method.

You can see how quickly shaping can create a confident dog that offers you a ton of behavior. These steps are huge for a 5 month old puppy and you can tell she's having a fun time knowing that she can "make me" click.

I know I spend a lot of time talking about hind end awareness and proprioception, but it really does unlock so many things for your dog. It creates a dog that is comfortable in their body, feels secure in unstable environments and allows you to easily teach everything from backing up, to tricks, to complex competition heelwork.

Note at the end Pepper runs off to look for the snacks she missed. This tells me that I've made the session potentially too long and she's losing interest. So I call her to me, she does an awesome recall off the food, I reward and quit the session. Total session time is around 2 minutes.

Let me know if you have questions!

Happy Training!

These are always great to watch. That video of you and Whip in the snow is really cool!

Hi! If my dog engagement with the object is very little (after the second time I toss the cookie he will ignore the object and come to me) . Should I change the object? Or keep the object and increase time with practicing (in another session).

Move your body so that you are between the object and the dog. That way the dog always has to pass by the object on its way back to you. So you toss the cookie past the object, dog goes near the object, you click and reward. Another technique you could try is rewarding on the object. So dog does an interaction, reward on the object, then he's primed to "have an interaction" right after he eats the cookie, click for that, repeat. You may want to start with using a platform or a bath mat as your shaping object. If that doesn't make sense, I can do a little video up so everyone can see what I mean. Let me know!
