Hey All!

So this video is about 30 minutes and you can definitely listen to it podcast-style, though there are several picture examples towards the end. It talks about socializing dogs when you've got a dog in your household that has a habit you'd rather not have your new dog pick up, talks about genetics role in socialization, and also uses the puppy program I designed and ran in Colorado as a way to describe all the aspects of socialization I would include in your plan for your puppy. Feel free to ask questions or save them for the Q&A!

How do you pick your puppies first play dates?

DOGGY•U

Generally, I'm looking for dogs that are going to be similar energy and size as my puppy. If that's not something I have access to from friends or family, i would go to a training facility that offers supervised playgroups to try to find the right match. I would also look at social adult dogs my puppy van play with.

WOW! Thank you so much information, mind blown lol. Starting to google puppy playgroups as my guy wants to get a puppy in May-June. We'll most likely be signing up for your puppy course then. Questions: ~ Working with older dogs, do these same rules hold true? ~ Do you have a list of what your puppy socialization playgroup did? I'd love to have a list to compare with and ideas of what to do for our personal puppy and for the shelter/rescue dogs. ~ You mentioned California, as we live there, do you have a program here you recommend?! Thank you!!

With older dogs, socialization has to be taken on a case by case basis where you are meeting the dog where they are at but the same general ideas apply: - Watch what the dog is telling you about how they are feeling - Let them experience socialization moments at a safe distance However, some adult dogs are never going to be thrilled about playing with other dogs. Think of it like humans - after a certain age, going to the club isn't as fun anymore and you prefer to hang with your close friends only. I don't have a list but Dr. Ian Dunbar has an extensive list of things to socialize a puppy to. I do have this video though of some of the stuff we did in the puppy class that will likely be helpful:https://youtu.be/PXrIgdlwsN8

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with puppy programs in California - sorry! I might ask your local dog training group or facebook groups in your area to see if anyone has a recommendation.
