Hey Friends!

Releasing this video ad-free prior to its public release later this week! This video goes over common questions about service dogs including:

- Does my dog need to be certified?

- What's the best breed for service work?

- Where is my service dog allowed to go?

- Where is my service dog in training allowed?

And much more! If you have questions, feel free to leave them below.

If you want to help me out and help others find the channel, youtube rewards videos where people watch the video all the way through, click on an additional video, and like and comment on videos. So all that is very helpful, even if you're here for pet dog stuff.

Thank you all for being here! I'll see you for the livestream next week!

Best,

Laura (currently in Colorado!)

Hi Laura! thank you for the video! I have a question: if you were to chose a German shepherd puppy from a litter, what tests would you perform to select the best dog for service dog work?

DOGGY•U

Hi GV! I can definitely add this to the list of questions for the April Q&A so I can discuss this at length. I will announce the date of in the next week or so. Feel free to also post it on that post so others can piggyback off your question!

Thank you Laura!

The Dog Services

I would like to know if I don't go through a breeder, what should I look for if I want to rescue? I am specifically referring to the age of the dog.

Ari (they-them)

This was really helpful!! I was originally working with a local service dog trainer who was helping me pick out a breed and breeder. I ended up not continuing with her for a few reasons, but one of them was because of how she approached helping me find a dog breed. At the time, I was really hoping to get a dog like a Cattle Dog or GSP or Vizsla (I wanted a challenge lol and I'm a VERY high-energy/active person so I didn't think a lab could keep up with me), and she was supporting me and encouraging me despite me checking myself and asking her a few times whether she thought that was realistic. I know I can get into over-confident states of mind and bite off more than I can chew, so I was careful to ask her several times whether she thought I should just settle for a lab. Ultimately, I wish she had been a bit blunter about the reality of SD breed choices like you were in this video. I eventually came to my own conclusion about getting a lab (many months later) and feel really confident about this decision, but I wish I had seen this video when I first started looking! And/or been encouraged more by my trainer at the time to look into more appropriate breed choices!! So thank you for the video and I hope it reaches the people it needs to reach!

I totally get this sentiment Ari and I'm really glad you spent the time to do the research. I know I kind of hammer this one to death with the breed choice stuff, but I've been on the trainer end of equation enough times with devastated owners because the breed they chose (because they REALLY wanted that particular breed) was doing exactly what the breed was bred to do, and service work wasn't a fair or realistic option for that dog. That being said, I'm happy to work with people who choose non-traditional breeds, as long as they fully understand and have a plan for if the dog isn't the right fit for service work (which should be true for any owner-trainer even if they get a lab - they're not all right for the job). But, I want to be in the game of getting the owner-trainer the best chance they can possibly have with training their dog. It's hard enough already to "make" a service dog and the stakes are much higher with owner-training than a program dog that can simply be career-changed if they don't work out in a program.
