Alright, you all asked for it, so here it is: a puppy daily schedule (attached below).

I have always been hesitant to make a schedule because my fear is that some people will follow the schedule without taking into account the dog in front of them, and their particular needs. Additionally, as puppies grow, their schedules change. For instance, in this schedule, I have you training your puppy three times a day with meals (to help you remember to train with every meal!). However, as the puppy's attention span increases, sometimes I'll pepper in 5-8 very short training sessions a day. And frankly, you are always training or untraining your dog, so all time spent with your dog should be considered some form of training.

That all being said, I totally understand wanting some type of plan to follow, so, here it is! A loosely timed out plan that you can adjust to fit your schedule, and your puppy's needs. Let me know if you have any questions! :)

I feel like 😳 I’ve been doing this all wrong, no wonder I’m exhausted! LoL I’ve been trying to stay with her at the crate until she calms down at night, turning away from her when she whines, turning back to her when she quiets down. Should I just be letting her whine, bark and howl? Or is the above the right call? Like right now we’ve been up and down for 2 hours trying to get her to bed (9pm start, 10:44pm right now) I have not been crating her during the day, I do put her in her play pen with her crate. Seems this will shift things. Thank you for this document, very eye opening!

In an ideal world, we're not letting dogs "cry it out" (in an ideal world). If your puppy is specifically struggling with the crate, I would spend time practicing crate training outside of night time and crating by playing games where the dog is being rewarded in the crate, and periodically dropping food in the crate that's in the pen. Then I would have them sleeping in the pen, near you at night while you work on crating during the day. When the puppies aren't exposed to crates when they are at the breeder's house, and they are also taken away from their littermates, the transition can be tough. Sometimes, making sure they get nice and tired before bed, have a chew to work through before bed, and then having them right next to you in the crate (elevated next to your bed, or you on the couch near them) can be really helpful. You can stick your fingers into the crate to comfort them, especially during the first week which can be the most challenging.

Laura, with this ONE document, you change my life. I was EXHAUSTED with Nami. I didn't know what kind of schedule she needed, and I was trying to figure out her rhythm. But the reality is, I needed to set up a schedule for her and then feel into her needs. I went from scattered, exhausted 24/7, with no time to shower or even brush my teeth. Or maybe I had the time but I was too scattered to realize I could breathe for a moment. She's 9 weeks TODAY! 🤗 She's sleeping peacefully in her crate. Today she was SUPER energized so she didn't go for a nap until later than I plan, but that's okay! We did 2 rounds of play instead of one and she's been dozing well. She's quieting quicker and easier. She's happier and I am too. THANK YOU!

I'm so glad you found this so helpful! I think sometimes I forget (even though I try not to!) what it's like when you are just starting out and totally new to puppies., Puppies are A LOT. And they are so much work (I never forget that part!). So i'm glad this document helped you set a schedule and helped you also have some time to yourself. I promise to be less resistant to making schedules and providing more structure in the future ;)

Yesterday Nami slept from 9:10-2:44pm 😳 Do I just let her sleep until she wakes up or do I wake her up for her meals, such as lunch to keep some semblance of structure for her? Normally her schedule fluctuates by an hour. Like wake up time is 6am, but the other day she woke up at 5am needing to pee so we started the day then as she was energetic afterwards. (This long nap may be due to her going to the vet the day before, her schedule got thrown outa wack.)

If she had a big day and it's not going to affect your day to let her sleep a bit more, knowing she'll be energetic later, let sleeping dogs lie :)
