Hey DoggyU Crew!

Thank you so much for supporting my channel and becoming patrons! This month's live Q&A is on Tuesday, April 26th at 4pm EST.

You can come on Patreon and click the link above at the designated time, or if you have notifications turned on, you should receive an email right before I go live.

Please post any questions you have on this post so I can collect them for the livestream. If you do not wish to publicly ask your question, feel free to use the message function on Patreon to send a question to me and you will remain anonymous to the other members.

A few reminders:

- Questions should be broad enough that I don't have to see the specific dog to help with an answer.

- I will close questions 48 hours prior to the livestream so I have time to prepare now that you're such a robust group of dog trainers! I look forward to joining everyone live in a few weeks!

Best,

Laura

Thank you! They called him a double-doodle. Genetic test show that he is about 60% poodle and a mix of lab/golden retriever

I hope you are enjoying / enjoyed your vacation! (whenever you see this) I don't know how to phrase this as a question exactly... But I'd be interested to hear you talk about the transition from having a very young puppy that you manage very tightly to a dog that gets to hang out and chill more often. Are there timelines or milestones or things that you do to help with that go smoothly?

Hi laura! I would like to know how to train for flights, specially the part of staying in a small space for hours. My dog understands when i ask him for a down stay in a specific place, but after 20-30mins he will begin to stretch/ get more space while sleeping

I am also interested on more tips for teaching my 3yrs old dog to do his business on command and if possible in a pee pad ( he grew up in an open space and we never had to use one for his potty training) Thanx! Happy rest of your vacations

DOGGY•U

Hi Teresita - can I ask you why you would like an adult dog to go from going outside to on a pee pad? That would help with how to approach this. Doing it on cue is definitely something I can address also!

Laura, here are my questions for the April Q&A: 1) After a service dog is fully trained, does the handler need to keep giving him treats as reinforcements? 2) is it possible for a dog to be both a service mobility dog and a personal protection dog at the same time?- not a crazy war or police dog but a protection dog that would defend the owner from a rapper for example 3) When to use a harness and when to use a colar? 4) if you were to chose a German shepherd puppy (or any breed) from a litter, what tests would you perform to select the best dog for service dog work? 5) How to train a dog for balance assistance? 6) Is it possible to train a dog to assist in crossing the streeet? So the dog would know when there are no cars and is safe to cross? 7) Can you talk a bit about variable ratio reinforcement? Do you use it? If so, how do you use it? (chapter 9 of How To Behave So Your Dog Behaves, Sophia Yin). It is a lot of questions, i am sorry. I will understand if you cant answer them all. Thank you!

Hi, do you have tips on how to teach the dog to get in a “doggie donut” (curled up) position? Would this be something to teach by capturing?

Phil & Christina

My female puppy before being 9 weeks has started to hump her toys. She is normally excited and enjoying play. Do I let her be, redirect…? Why are puppies only suppose to have a 10-15minute playdate? What happens/effects/damages from a 20-30minute playdate? Properly picking up a puppy/dog. Can you speak to this and the risks/injuries?

Laura I also have a question about punishment: in what cases there is punishment? Or in positive reinforcement there is never punishment? I see a lot of positive reinforcement trainers arguing that you must always show the dog an alternative behavior instead of punishment, but on the other hand I see a lot of personal protection dog trainers and sport dog trainers using some kind of punishment, specially e-collars. They argue that you can’t train a dog without any punishment, it would be impossible. What is your point of view?

The Dog Services

Hello, I would like to know the temperament check for an adult dog that is at a rescue. This dog will probably not be for a service dog, but could be trained for obedience and public outings. Thanks.

DOGGY•U

Got it and thanks for the upgrade to Crew status! I will give you some temperament tests I use for a quick assessment and go over some general assessments concepts.

DOGGY•U

Alright everyone! Thanks for all your questions this month! With a total of 22 questions I am going to go ahead and close questions. See you all on Tuesday!
