Alright everyone! July questions time!

Reminder that we are now doing our livestreams via Zoom and I will post the youtube link after the event. Participants will be muted so please put follow-up questions that pop up during the Zoom in the chat box.  The cut off for submitting questions is 48 hours prior to the Zoom so that I have time to prepare. Please limit questions to 2 per person so I have time to answer them within the hour. Questions should be general enough that I don't need to know your specific dog to answer the question (this also allows everyone to benefit from the question).

Please post your questions for livestream below in the comments! See you next week!

Laura DeMaio Roy is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

What makes a dog "selectively" attack one dog and leave alone another one?

Arantxa Rosas

Hi Laura, couple of questions here: How to handle a dog's teenage phase? My puppy changed a lot within a month, she doesn't feel attracted by the same rewards, she is more reactive, she is stubborn and cries and demands more attention. How to keep treats attractive for my dog? Even though I tried to change the treats and have variety, she always wants more high values, which are not always sustainable. This will be my first live on Patreon so I'm excited!!!

How to prepare for an afternoon flight in terms of fasting and water restriction?

I am looking around to get service dog for myself, while doing some essential training (and DPT) for my current dog at home! Are there any tips/warnings/cautionary tales regarding bringing home a service dog when there already is an existing dog as an emotional support dog? Would there be a difference between an existing dog that is well trained, and an existing dog that is not well trained?

Melody Townsend

We are hitting the teen phase, she is doing well with it, but I second the puppy-teen tips. Also the “auto sit” do u teach it? Do service dogs need it? I’m finding with Shimmer that I don’t think “I” need her to have it but want to make sure she has everything she needs. (Auto sit as in ur heeling and they sit every time u stop walking) and if u have time or later on, early warning signs of heat and what to do for training when we get there would be great!! I have not had an intact dog for around 25 years!! Got her some super cute mermaid panties ✅ but otherwise 🤷🏻‍♀️ lololol thanks so much Laura I’m behind again but at least this time it’s cause we’re doing lots of actual training!! 🤣🎉🎉🤗

1. What are your thoughts on flooding/habituation when socializing a SD prospect? Do you ever choose to flood a SD prospect during socialization, or does the potential fallout outweigh the benefits for you? I know it comes with risks and a lot of trainers I respect advise against it. What are your thoughts? Are there traits in a puppy you look for that influence whether you decide to flood or not? 2. What is the difference between a No-Reward Marker (NRM) and telling your dog “no”? Ex. telling a dog in a ring “wrong” when he picks up the wrong scent item (NRM), vs. telling a dog in your yard “no” when he walks into the garden plot (often called aversive and a punisher by R+ trainers I know)? - Do you train your SD prospects “no”? - (When) do you tell your personal dogs “no”? - (When) do you tell your SD puppies “no”?

I see what you did here. Make your two questions have 100 sub questions 😂 - great topics!

Wondering what you think about setting your dog up for failures when you think they really have the concept down? This is to teach them the boundaries of the desired behavior. No "no reward marker" intended. I see the intent here, but also feel like the whole point of success history is to prevent failure, and failure on purpose undermines that. However, having been a video game designer, I know a bit of failure after a lot of success can be very motivational.

Ari (they-them)

Is this in response to my question? If so, I don't know a lot about using "no reward markers" in training but I listened to a fantastic podcast on it that might help clarify why they can be helpful, even with a strong history of success!! I think the general jist of it is to clarify to the dog exactly why they might not be receiving a reinforcement for a behaviour or behaviour chain, so they know exactly what to fix the next time they do it. Here is the link if you're interested!! https://open.spotify.com/episode/4j2mbcGsOJ9TGi3dF6lvqn?si=7fe07bc031c84535 I asked the question because I think it's a cool concept that doesn't contradict LIMA/R+ training and I don't know much about it!

Hi Laura, my pup is now 6 months old and probably only half grown (std. poodle size). We have managed to potty train him while in a pen and crate in our city apartment (plan was to move before now). I am wondering how to transition him to rest of house with a short leash. At this time he still nips and wants everything in his mouth. I am prepared for the leave it and drop it monologue. Is there a sequence that you recommend re duration, boundaries (mine vs. his), etc.? He is very smart and I feel like his surroundings are un-stimulating. Thanks.

DOGGY•U

Hi Bonnie - I'm a little bit confused about this question if you could clarify: Are you asking how to increase freedom in the house in regards to potty training, or are you asking how to increase freedom in general in the house with a dog that's tends to explore their environment with their mouth. Regarding the short leash - are you talking about putting him on a tether outside of the crate, or a drag line? If you could please make your question more general so I'm able to answer it for everyone that would be great. Thanks!

Rick Lees

I don't have one specific question about it, but what are your go-to adjustments or habits when you are training a million mile an hour kind of dog? Especially as he's getting to be a slightly older puppy, I'm not finding that I need to get him comfortable with the new task or trick or whatever, but slow him down so I can make the lessons bite-size enough. For example, I wanted to transfer his touch to a flag or a lid, (like in your closing cabinets video), but he has so much gusto that he switched from booping the target to investigating it with his teeth. 😂 General or specific advice appreciated

DOGGY•U

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful questions! Questions are now closed. See you Tuesday!
