Happy Monday everyone!

I'm in the process of editing a new video which will hopefully come out on Patreon ad-free on Wednesday evening before it's published on YouTube. The video will be on preventing common training mistakes, so stay tuned for that in your inbox.

Just wanted to drop this here: a study on using aversives vs. positive reinforcement for training dogs. Most of you are here because you practice R+ or LIMA training methods, but having the science to back up those choices is important.

Here's a link to the full study: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/biorxiv/early/2019/10/29/823427.full.pdf

Note that to qualify for this study the dog needed to be free from aggression, SA, or similar, though I believe the findings would hold true for those types of cases as well.

Kindness To Dogs During Training Matters

The use of even mild punishments in training can make dogs more stressed and more pessimistic compared to dogs who are trained with positive reinforcement-based methods. That's an important conclusion of a study by Ana Catarina Vieira de Castro of Porto, Portugal and her colleagues. They recently published Does training method matter?

Good stuff. I can’t wait to watch the new video you’re doing. I’m thoroughly convinced that any issue my dog has learning something is probably about 95% my fault.
