Hello from Kansas City!

I just made it here after a 21 hour drive and it's totally gorgeous!

Anywho - I just realized that with my Denver schedule, really the only viable day for the livestream is Monday. You can find the link above or below.

Reminder that we are now doing our livestreams via Zoom and I will post the YouTube link after the event. Participants will be muted so please put follow-up questions that pop up during the Zoom in the chat box.

The cut off for submitting questions is 48 hours prior to the Zoom (Saturday) so that I have time to prepare. Please limit questions to 1 per person so I have time to answer them within the hour. Questions should be general enough that I don't need to know your specific dog to answer the question (this also allows everyone to benefit from the question).

Please post your questions for livestream below in the comments! See you next week!

I look forward to you joining me on Monday!

Laura DeMaio Roy is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

How do you train dog not to bark at any external stimuli? This is our biggest hurdle, as he barks at new dogs, other barking, and when he gets excited. How do you manage this behavior to a level of being ready for full public access?

Thanks for your question Ellie! I'll speak generally about this but if you could let me know your dog's breed, current age, and how long they have been reactive, that would be great. Thanks!

I understand that as a service dog, my dog should not be allowed to go up onto furniture. My 18-week-old standard poodle puppy, however, has other ideas, and loves to run up onto the couch in my bedroom and (especially while trying to*play* with our cat) run onto the couch in our family room. He has beds in both areas. And while he's usually very well behaved, he's starting to jump onto the couch and then jump onto me, nipping at my ponytail, hands, legs, or arms. Pushing him or otherwise physically encouraging him down just makes it a game. What are some strategies I can use to discourage this behavior? Thanks!

Can you talk about variable levels of reinforcement and fading food rewards? In Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Prior she says "During shaping, put the current level of response onto a variable schedule of reinforcement before adding or raising the criteria" (page 38 of the revised addition). I feel that the process of shaping moves so fast I don't have time for a variable schedule of reinforcement. I was thinking variable schedule happens after the behavior is where you want and giving it a cue. However, I have lots of behaviors on cue and I'm struggling to think about where I have moved to a variable schedule well. I've moved to chaining behaviors, so in a way my dog isn't always rewarded 100% for each cue. But for us, every interaction still ends in a treat or sometimes (rarely) a toss of a toy (just because I have problems playing with my dogs well, a question for another Zoom maybe). Can you talk about your process and what you think variable schedule reinforcement and fading food rewards looks like?

Hi Laura! Due to health reasons I am being asked to eat every X amount of time. I am having a hard time reminding my self to do so. Is there something we can train to have my service dog alert/remind me ?

This came up recently and I realized I don’t know what to do here… I took Shimmer to an outdoor movie night at a friends house and only expected her to “close/heel” the rest of the time was just exposure for her. No Expectations. She did GREAT!!!!!!!! Only thing was I realized, because we were on grass she thought it was just ok to pee right next to where we were sitting, and it was, ya know, but what if that had been poop? How do I get her to understand if we are at a friends house or outdoor music thing or anything outside how do I get her to ask to go potty, when she knows she standing on a “potty” ? Thanks!!!!! And yes I have a fenced in yard.

At what point during a casual walk do you allow/not allow sniffing? I dont mind my dog exploring the world during his time off, but I also want to get a decent walk in! What is a good balance you enforce with your dogs?

My 8 months old Labrador in training is reactive (barking, lunging) to some dogs, people, some odd things (sculpture), and unexpected sounds. She has been reactive since I got her at 7 weeks. I use the engage/disengage tool, which you demonstrate well in your video. This works well with dogs and when she stairs or get stiff looking at the trigger. However, her barking is sometimes totally unpredictable. When this happens I laugh, try to interrupt, or move away if I can guess the trigger. What should I do in this situation? How can I help her be more confident and less reactive to those odd triggers?

Eve

How often does a dog need to task to be considered a service dog? I think the ADA would say as long as they are task trained they are a service dog even if the task is never needed, but what is your opinion? If a dog only tasks once a year should they still be allowed public access? What about once in their lifetime?

DOGGY•U

Thanks everyone for the questions! Q&A submissions are now closed. I just made it to Denver and I'll see you all Monday!
