Hey DoggyU Peeps!

Wanted to give you a little update on what's happening over here in Cali. This video is all about what a trainer does in the face of new challenges.

In CT, we don't live in an off-leash environment. She's got a fenced yard at the house. Not the case here! And here there is also the noise, the cats, the wildlife, and the neighboring barking dogs. Lots of new challenges to live with for the next few weeks. So in this video I discuss how I'm working with Whip to be both comfortable and safe in this new environment.

Note that if I was not confident that Whip was off-leash safe in this environment I'd be employing my 10ft line on a regular basis.

Hope this chat is helpful in knowing that we are always training and always troubleshooting our training in new environments :)

Now we're off to the forest and the coast because it's going to be 103 here today!

A good conversation! With the issue you had with the male deer (I think that's what it was) I'm surprised that you do allow that much off leash in the woods. I think I'd be too nervous it'd happen again! While it's probably a lot like the recall, I wouldn't mind seeing a little video on the beepy recall. I hope you are having fun in Cali. Looks like you are up in the Sierras. Very nice up there, but it's HOT in Cali right now. Stay cool!

117 today in Los Gatos! We escaped to Monterey! As for the deer thing. As with everyone, I have to balance risk and reward. I had one really bad incident with a deer in the 19 years i've been hiking alone in the woods. For that reason, I think allowing Whip to have freedom (under supervision of course) to investigate the property and be a dog, as well as hike in the woods with me off-lead has a higher reward than the very small chance that something bad will happen with a deer. I have a general philosophy that I don't let one bad experience ruin things for me. If it were a trend, I would definitely look at it differently. I do feel like I do a really good job mitigating risk and using management, like leashes, which that is most appropriate (dusk). Hope that makes sense! I'll be working on that beep recall video soon ;)
