Just a quick video today about why I use harnesses with puppies. Besides the reasons I've talked about before (not accidentally injuring them if they hit the end of the leash, making sure to preserve their collar or front clip for loose leash walking only), there's another big reason that has to do with chewing and leash placement. Check it out!

When will be the best time to train a puppy get used to gentle leader? I am consider getting cocker spaniel for my next SD while I am having golden retriever for my first SD. I may not going to have to use any head collar any more. I would like to know your preference on using head collar for large breeds. Thanks for your great video.

Hi Emily! I recommend introducing the headcollar and conditioning the dog to it as early as possible, even if you don't plan to use it right away. It's easier to get them accustomed to it young (for reference, when I worked as a guide dog instructor, they started working with introducing the puppies to it at 6 weeks). It's similar to muzzling conditioning in that I want to train it, even if I may never use it. With headcollars we need to be mindful of the leverage differential we have on the dog and use it as a way to help get more moments that we can reward and reinforce and not as a cure-all to walking issues. It's just part of the equation to help while we train better walking behavior. Hope that helps!

I know you recomend the balance harness but what would you recommend for a mobility harness? I am unsteady on my feet where I wobble when standing still, can't walk a straight line, and at times trip, stumble, and fall.

So I have very limited experience with mobility harnesses but the brands I have used are Bold Lead Design and Bridgeport K9 Equipment.

I'll be the proud owner of an amazing Swiss White Shepherd in a little less than a month. Your pdf puppy guide 101 and all your videos have been SUPER helpful. However, I went to the pet store to get my boy a harness today. The lady at the store looked ALARMED when I inquired about a harness for my puppy. She told me that it was dangerous, and patronized me about THE proper way to raise a puppy. And in particular, she told me about the fact that a harness could harm a SWS puppy if I or him were to pull on the leash. I told her about the interest of having a ring on the back for all-purpose/loose leash training, and a ring at the bottom of the neck for heelwork (so as to dissociate the two)... to no avail. I was so confused that I didn't get any in the end. Pulling ain't good in any case, no matter if it's a harness of a collar, right? Hence heel training has to be properly reinforced with no leash in the first place.

Yeah, we don't want them dragging on any equipment, but of the equipment to pull on, harnesses are the safest (sled dogs, weight pull, canicross, skijoring, etc all use harnesses). But even on a long line, I want to teach my dog that when they feel tension on the line to release that tension. The tough part about the general public is that everyone is going to have an opinion on what you do with your dog. You have to decide which sources your trust and work best for your dog.
