Q&A Live: Monday 05/22/23 @4:00pm ET (link below)

Special Topics Live: Teaching Impulse Control, Calmness and Neutrality (Inner Circle, Elite, Top Fan): Thursday 05/25/23 @9:30 am ET (link in separate post)

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR! :)

Reminder that our livestreams are via Zoom and I will post the YouTube replay link after the event with a brief summary of the topics covered. You can always go back and watch past livestreams even if you can't be there live. Participants will be muted so please put follow-up questions that pop up during the Zoom in the chat box. Reminder that questions should be related to the topic I am currently covering. If I forget to turn closed captioning on, please remind me!

Those members who are at the "Crew" ($6/month) level or above are able to submit one question per month with their membership.

The cut-off for submitting questions is 2 days prior to the Zoom (Saturday May 20th) so that I have time to prepare. Please limit questions to 1 per person so I have time to answer them within the hour. Questions should be general enough that I don't need to know your specific dog/behavior to answer the question (this also allows everyone to benefit from the question). If you're looking for more specific feedback on your dog, be sure to join the Elite or Top Fan membership level for video review of your training.

The Special Topics livestream this month is going to be on Impulse Control, Calmness and Neutrality. I'll be combining a bunch of Patron requests to discuss impulse control and creating calmness around distractions.

We will touch on training for settling, as well as building a dog that ignores things in their environment, along with games to help train a dog to focus on you when distractions are present, as well as how you need to set your dog up to be successful at different stages in your dog’s life. (Video of Whip displaying neutral calm behavior during Clicker Expo 2018 with loads of people and dogs walking by. She is 1.5 years old in the video).

This special topics will focus a lot on settling and neutrality in stationary positions. I do have plans for further special topics on building neutrality while moving. Some of the games and exercises we discuss will also lend themselves to neutrality while moving, but we're starting with settling because if your dog isn't able to ignore distractions while stationary, they will generally have a hard time doing it while moving. Building settling and neutrality starts at home so many of the things we discuss you'll be able to start right today!

To access this special topics livestream, a link will appear on the feed for Inner Circle and Elite members later today. If this interests you, you can upgrade your membership at any time, and as always, you can watch any past livestream replays, both special topics and Q&A.

Back to the Live Q&A: Please post your questions for the March 20th livestream below in the comments!

See you next week!

My question is SD whining, which she uses to communicate her needs, feeling my anxiety, leading me to food or the door to potting. I want to train her to have more reliable anxiety alerts from sensing my emotions. I don't have physical breathing or movement for being nervous. How can I teach more reliable anxiety alerts at home and later in public, unlike just regular whining and being calm, feeling my anxiety and not to get nervous with me.

My SDiT has a really hard time with wait and stay. He is finally getting that when we get out of the car he has to wait for me to say its ok but the minute I open the front door at home he darts out that door (thankfully I have an inclosed porch so he can’t go anywhere BUT) How can I get him to understand that he needs impulse control at the front door too?

I would be interested in talking further about doing dog sports with your service dog. Specifically the challenges that training a service dog for some dog sports may present or what sports seem to gel well with service trained dogs. I have a dog I’m owner-training to be a service dog and through the training process I’ve found that she has throughly enjoyed learning certain things that make me think oh maybe she might also enjoy trick training or some other dog sport - I don’t know that many. Maybe that could be part of the talk too?

Not a question but a suggestion for the DoggyU store-? It’s a play on an existing generic mug/T-shirt: “If at first you don’t succeed, try what Laura at DoggyU told you to do.” I’d rock that T-shirt with sincerity! ;-D

The ADA defines a service dog as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability”. What is the difference between work and a task? Hypothetically could a service dog not be trained any tasks, but having the dog walk at a heel next to the handler helps mitigate their disability and that would be considered “work” and they would be a service dog?

Thanks everyone for the questions! Question submission is now closed. See you Monday! (or for the replay!)
