Does my dog need to pass a test to be a "real" service dog?

If you've been following my channel for any length of time, and you live in the US, you'll know that the ADA does not require any testing for your dog to be considered a legal service dog. But that doesn't mean that you (and I) don't want to be sure that the training we've done with our dogs is objectively rigorous enough that our dog is considered a solid representative of a service dog out in public.

In this video I talk about the testing structure I use to ensure that my service dog is up to industry standards, and how you can use this testing structure to create a training plan for your dog as well as feel confident that your dog is meeting service dog standards (and get ribbons for all your hard work, if that's your jam!).

As always, this video is AD-FREE until public release on Friday.

Thank you all for being here and I'll see you next week at the live Q&A!

Have a great weekend!

Oh my gosh, THIS. All of this. As an owner trainer I feel like there’s so much to train that I get overwhelmed without any kind of structure, lesson plan, or guide to follow. I watch all of your videos repeatedly and have great support from some other trainers, so we know the things we need to work on but it’s like dumping a bucket full of pebbles. Each pebble represents something we need to learn and they’re just scattered everywhere, piled on to each other, it’s chaos! This video helps me gather each pebble and place them down in a more organized manner.. if that makes sense. We have spent the last 8 weeks training for the CGC so it feels really good to be on the right track (have our pebbles in a row, so to speak) and to be able to organize our training for the next milestone. Thank you for your continued invaluable guidance on all things service dog!

Yeah! Thank you so much for discussing psychiatric service dog partners(PSDP). I went to two conventions and couldn't thank the group enough. Pass the two tests there in person. Everyone there is wonderful people and helpful. You will see me there next year. If you have the budget for a convention, you should go. Those events take a term from the east coast and west coast. During the test, they will film you for free to serve as documentation for you. I am going to throw another resource here from my group. "It's the organization ASAP or Advocates for Service Animal Partners. Their website is www.serviceanimals.info, and their phone number is 855-272-7211. Put this number in your phone; you can call it 24/7 if you have an access challenge. They will advocate for you for free!"

I'm so glad this was helpful Morgan! It is really hard to know what to focus on. While training to a test isn't the goal, the tests are all-encompassing enough that they cover the main things one would need for the dog to be successful in many environments. Then you just plug in the tasks, and a few etiquette things like tucking under a table, and you're good to go!

I'm so glad I've joined your Patreon community. My dog Bruno has his CGC, CGCA, and a TKN (Novice Tricks) certificate. He's a Sheprador, and a big one at that - 95 lbs! I've trained him specifically for Counterbalance, Brace, and Forward Momentum for my MS. I'd like to take him through CGCU, but in the last few months, a few BIG problems have cropped up, and I'm not sure what to do about it: He's still a little leash reactive, but he's getting better at it. I'd love to teach him to ignore dogs altogether.

Dang it! I forgot the Shift+Enter! Next, all of a sudden, car horns are scaring him. This was never a problem until about April. How do I help him through this? I got a new minivan in May, and he occupies the way-back end. He now BARKS HIS FOOL HEAD OFF when we get to our destinations! He's super excited, I know, but my husband can't even handle it, and has taken to wearing earplugs. Thing is - he doesn't even bark at the UPS/FedEx folks! I've never had to teach him "Speak and Shush". And now, just in the last couple of weeks, when we get ready to leave a shop, he lies down and refuses to get up, even with a treat in front of his nose! If I give the treat to a complete stranger, he complies! Talk about conduct unbecoming of a Service Dog! Again, how do I help him through this? I get it that this is a full time job. I live in a very rural place and I have to drive 45 minutes to get anywhere to work with him in public. He's a total gentleman on our driveway walks, and an anxious mess in town.

Hi Lisa! Welcome to Patreon! It looks like you may have posted in the wrong spot. Was this your submission for the monthly Q&A? If so, each Patreon member is able to submit one question per month. If you want to narrow it down to your most important question that doesn't require me to know your particular dog to answer, you can post it on this month's call for question. You can find out more info about submission in your welcome note. Thanks! And welcome to the community!
