Hey Folks!

Happy Ad-Free Thursday!

This dog, Lunchbox, was a super-fun dog to work with. He was also a fun challenge! Bull Terrier's aren't known for their trainability, and this one had very few skills that he came to the table with besides being the happiest pup ever! I also met him literally 30 seconds before taping. And yet, he was an absolute rockstar! Big thanks to Danielle for letting me borrow him!

I wanted to show an alternate way to teach a paw/shake. Because I don't typically teach this behavior until the dog has other skills under their belt, the dogs I work with almost always already have an It's Yer Choice style leave-it game under their belt. This means they won't offer pawing at my hand. Because of that, I find it helpful to teach it as a target. Teaching the skill as a target also lends itself well to any paw alerts you want to do for service dog work or if you want to use paws for button pressing.

I'm planning on releasing a slightly longer version next week so you can see more of the actual training sessions that I had to cut for the YouTube algorithm.

As always, it really helps my channel/ the algorithm when you:

1) Watch the video in YouTube by clicking the "YouTube" logo above, and click the thumbs up button

2) Leave a comment

3) Watch all the way through.

Happy Training Ya'll!

P.S. See you tomorrow at 1pm ET for the lunch and learn which I am now calling "bubble tea & babbling"!

How you shape it if you have a dog that’s very rough on you with the paw. How do you get that dog to offer a lighter touch with their paw? If the dog doesn’t offer that? Mark slightly before the paw hits the target or your hand?

Love this!! Something I did really early on with Winry was teach her left and right - she does "shake" for her right paw and "paw" for her left paw. It's been SO HELPFUL to have her know that difference, whether we're using it to get her untangled from something (she is NOT graceful, bless her heart), nail trims, or separating out interacting with other people (people tend to default to "shake" and that's a behavior that's okay for her to do with others) with her alert behavior (which I kept as "paw" while teaching the alert. Now she's like 75/25 which paw she chooses to alert with, but it was super helpful in the beginning to know whether she should be in handler focus mode or "interact with the public" mode) We've also found that it was a great foundation behavior for teaching her to put both paws up on something for either DPT, hitting handicap door placards, or any situation that requires a little more finesse than her super gung-ho, "i'm going to put all of the power of a 65lb lab behind this!" paw target. I love her enthusiasm, but sometimes you need less enthusiasm!

You’d have to experiment a bit in this one, but yes, clicking prior to touching, experimenting with placement of the object (does higher up make them softer?), selecting for softer paws, all come to mind as things id mess around with :)
