Hey Folks!

I hope you had a chance to watch my most recent succession planning video. I've had several questions on it regarding why I'm not choosing a herding breed for my next service dog, even though I have the lifestyle to support the needs of a high-energy dog.

Because of that, I'm thinking of having an informal 30-minute livestream on Friday 09/01 at 1pm ET to discuss this decision and my personal experiences that are informing that decision at greater length than I was able to in the video. Figured we could grab some bubble tea, celebrate the long weekend, and I could talk a bit about this (probably somewhat polarizing) topic.

But before I pack that into my schedule I wanted to check if this interests any of you.

This would be available to all paid members ($3 and above).

Thanks for your feedback and maybe I'll see you all Friday!

I would either join live or watch the replay.

probably both, live and replay at least twice. I love aussies but they are too small for what I need as a service dog and my only herd is down to 1 chicken. Not much to herd here. BooHoo.

Same here! I’ll watch live if I’m available, but will definitely watch the replay. This topic is not at all polarizing for me—I’m just curious. I understand there are very good reasons not to choose a herding breed for many if not most types of service work. I’m just interested in knowing your specific considerations in choosing a service dog, as I consider my pet dog succession plans. The topic of various dog breed pros and cons is endlessly fascinating to me! Re: breed misconceptions and prejudices… When we started with donkeys for a long time I considered horses dull and lacking in mental subtlety—that is until we got our own sweet horse to ride & love for 18+ years till his passing at 34. We still have Hank the saddle donkey now—from age 5 mos to his currently spry age of 24. And he is perfect for my needs. Say, you aren’t considering a mini service horse, are you?? 😉

I would love to join the live, but may end up on the replay. I currently have a miniature American Shepherd as my service dog. They're lovely, but I 💯 get why they're not always ideal for this work. Sam and I still have sticky bits we're working on that I would not be encountering with the standard 3 breeds.

I have another meeting at 1 pm on Friday so I will watch replay. I am definitely very interested in this topic because I have a herding dog.

I love herding dogs and have had two Australian Cattle Dogs, my second one lived to 16 years old, but they are far too small to be the mobility dog I need. I was waiting to grieve her loss and find the right dog for me when I found out that you can owner train your assistance dog (what we call service dogs here in Australia and in Britain) in Australia.
