Hey Folks,

This isn't my usual video. However, I've been in this game a long time and I've made some observations about what people call "fake" service dogs, and I wanted to talk a little bit about them because the situation is not always what people expect.

While I'm not saying that there aren't people out there faking a disability (because that's what you're doing when you bring a pet into the store and don't have a disability), many more people have a disability and are going into stores with undertrained and/or ill-suited dogs for service work. And those same people are also living within a system in the US that makes access to healthcare and appropriate resources challenging.

So what do we do about it? That's what this video is about. But let's start with compassion and education. <3

Thank you SO MUCH for this video! Winry and I are working through getting bit by a dog at the airport and while she is so much more comfortable with the world and ready (and begging me!) to get back to work, I'm terrified to take her anywhere that's not a super safe, super controlled, most likely dog friendly anyway space because of "fake spotting". It's gotten very loud both from the service dog community and from the public, and I'm always so afraid she'll startle and bark (once! then settles!) and we'll end up on the front page of Reddit! We're essentially re-doing public access training from the ground up and it's so scary now to "level up" in difficulty because she very much looks like an adult dog and doesn't get the same "grace" that a puppy or teenage SDIT would get. One thing I didn't see mentioned in the video, and one thing I've found VERY effective in my local community, is to talk to the managers of the stores you frequent. Let them know the two questions they can ask, let them know that they can remove ANY dog, service dog or not, if it's being disruptive. Give gatekeepers that ask the ADA questions positive reinforcement if they ask you and then let you pass. Set a good example as a team, on good days of course :) I've seen a huge difference in the amount of barky, bitey, two aisles down from their owner flexi lead dogs since I started educating our local business owners, and it's made a huge difference in my confidence as a handler and made the world a little bit of an easier place for my wonderful dog who may make a mistake every so often!

You’re AWESOME. I’m in the process of desensitizing my dog from other dogs and people. It’s easy to do in Colombia 🇨🇴 but the only downside is everyone wants to pet him and it’s popular for owners to bring their dogs to meet yours, which I am against. But we’re making progress 😊🥰, thanks to you.

A lot of great points are made in this video. Supporting each other is huge. Using the distraction of another dog to work with yours is actually super helpful with training your own or clients dogs. To me the SDIT are not the once that I worry about. I worry about the once that are reactive and will bite other dogs or owners and not under handler’s control. Because the law is a bit loose so many businesses are afraid to ask a handler to leave if the dog is misbehaving, specially if they did answer the two questions correctly. Businesses really need more support to be able to make that call.

This is such a good video. For me, it is important that I realize some of my complaints about dogs in non pet friendly environments are pet peeves not necessarily covered by ADA regulations. For example, I really dislike dogs in shopping carts; I don't want their grubbly little paws and furry little butts on the same surface I place my food no matter how cute they are. While I may question if they are able to perform a task while in the grocery cart, I really have no way of knowing. So I use the sanitary wipes to clean all portions of the cart that might touch my fresh produce.
