Hey Folks!

This week's video is an overview of the framework I use for teaching behavior interruptions and alerts for physically cued behaviors.

This video also introduces my new course that trains behavior interruptions and alerts with step-by-step video instructions so that you can have a really reliable tasking behavior from your service dog. The course goes way above and beyond the outline in the video with in-depth, beginner friendly instruction, as well as troubleshooting tips so you know what to do if things aren't going as planned. You'll also be able to see a few of the DOGGY•U Patreon members and/or their dogs working through parts of the course!

You can find out more on the BIA course page here! It's currently being sold at 35% off with presale pricing.

And as a Patreon member you get an additional 20% off presale pricing. That's about half off! You can use code PATREON20 to recieve your discount.

And, if you don't want to purchase the course, the video above should give you some general guidelines to follow to help you in the training process!

And! You can help me help this video get love from the algorithm by:

We start with identifying the behavior you want interrupted or alerted to. Examples could be repetitive behaviors like leg shaking, tapping, nail biting, picking etc. or they could be precursors to an escalated medical episode like crying, hands over face, rocking etc. We then teach the dog a specific alert behavior like paws up, chin rest, or nose boop. Once the dog has trained the behavior to fluency, we pair this behavior with the human behavior we want alerted to (also called cue transfer). This video broadly goes over this service dog training framework. I can't wait. Just got paid today. Signing up tonight!

Tierney McGehee

Is there going to be a training video on how to get your dog to "boop" your leg?

DOGGY•U

Hi Tierney, That is the purpose of the full Behavior Interruptions and Alerts course that's being released March 1st. Teaching this behavior actually has a lot of steps, so the course goes through everything step-by-step so that you can get a really reliable alerting behavior.

Suzy S

How can I connect to the course on my laptop? It popped right up on my phone, but I cannot find a link on my laptop to go to courses.

DOGGY•U

Go to courses.doggyu.com and there should be a login button in the corner (usually three horizontal bars). That will bring you to the courses.

Suzy S

Thank you!

DOGGY•U

You’re welcome! Thanks for purchasing the course! Your first lessons should show up on March 1st (launch day)

I just watched the framework video, thank you! I saw that you don't cover increasing food/reward interest (for the dog, I'm plenty interested in food myself!). Do you have tips for that somewhere? My current SD is (unfortunately!) very picky, and rarely particularly food driven. I've done some searching, but not really found tips for that.

DOGGY•U

One of my qualifications for a service dog prospect is that they are highly food driven, because increasing food drive can take time/energy, and it's much easier to train a dog with natural food drive. That isn't helpful for you at this point, but is something to consider for your next dog. It's actually one of my top requirements for a SDiT (you'll see it on my lists of qualifications for what makes a good service dog) because so much food work is done in the way I train. Ideally, when selecting a service dog candidate, I want them to be able to work for kibble as an innate behavior, and switch between high and low value food, and also switch between food and toy rewards. So to answer your question: I believe I've talked about it before, but I can't point to where that is at the moment, so this would be a great question to submit for March's live Q&A so I can go a bit more in depth and give you a more developed answer than I can here. First, be sure there isn't a medical issue going. The only dog I was ever not able to use food with, I sent to the vet, and low and behold, they had severe gastric issues. If your tummy hurts, you don't want to eat. If that is cleared, here's some tips below: Train before mealtimes, train only for 30 seconds to 2 minutes and leave them wanting more, activate the dog by using chase/catching as options for receiving the food instead of food in hand, make play part of the food rewarding process if that gets them excited (spin touch etc.) up the value of the food and experiment with giving them choices about what they like, microwave the food (microwaved hot dogs/chicken, meatballs are better and stinkier than cold ones) train them to eat food as a behavior (ie, eat this piece of kibble, and I'll throw this ball), play games where you are hiding their meal (they must eat to stay alive, so they must have some interest in food) - this can teach them to work a bit for their food and can activate their seeking behaviors, use alternative rewards like a squirting bottle with low sodium chicken broth in it. Hope you can try out a few of those suggestions!

I got the course and am excited! My SDiT dog started alerting me by small licks or nudging with his tongue and idk how to refine or work on alerts. I'm excited to start this course!
