Shortest TL;DR : I should be able to work again before the end of this week. A new machine is on sight; old one stays as a heating aid for winter.I'm trying to take it with a wisp of humor, and a hopeful outlook, but the fact is my current computer has suddenly become unstable since last Thursday, and worsening to the point where is not reliable to work: a few minutes of Photoshop brings it up to around 85ºC and forces an instant shutdown without warning. For a fun anecdote: during the last file-save of Miranda's new page, the cpus spiked to 86ºC for half a second... Much sweat was profusely dropped. The file is okay, thankfully, but it bugs me because I was so close to finish that one.

I've been exploring thermal solutions over the weekend, attempting to fix a possible cooling issue, but the heat generated by the CPU doesn't seem normal, rocketing even at middle usage load. Which is leading me (and other informed opinions) to think is probably a socket or CPU malfunction. Trusty replacement parts on the local market are not easy to find, and time is a precious resource, so I don't think that route is an option.

Things is, I've been postponing an upgrade of my computer for a long while now, waiting for tech-prices on our local economy to stabilize... but it's been a futile wait thus far. So I'm taking this as an opportunity to get a new workstation. Hence the hopeful side! With all of your support thru Patreon, I should be able to get a pretty decent workstation. : )

I'm almost done now picking parts, and I can choose between the store's build-service (for a 2 days wait) or just putting it together myself (faster but... less expert hands, no shame to admit :P ). So I should be back at work soon either way —sooner than the end of this week! Cross fingers with me, ok?

Meanwhile I've borrowed a laptop from my dad, for connectivity, so I'll keep you posted!

Btw! Underclocking-in-the-meanwhile was an attempted solution, but the BIOS is not keeping the settings, and hard-crashes out of the booting screen each time I try again... It's been the oddest thing so far.

Elementehd

Much love and good luck with the new work station!

Fegu

Thankyou : )

Jonathan

hope the PC situation works out for you!

Verilog

Have you tried reapplying thermal compound to the processor where it connects to the cooler?

PF

And if going this route, even as a temp(orary, ha!) solution, make sure the heatsink mating surface is very clean and flat.

PF

Good luck to you! Take the time to figure out what will work best

renkash

Be safe! If you can, build it yourself. It's Lego for adults really, nowadays! Maybe check online what rigs other big time artists use.

Fegu

I did replace the thermal compound. Twice actually, to make sure it wasn't that. And I super-cleaned the contact surfaces each time. It has to be something else... specially considering the BIOS is not keeping the cpu's underclocked despite my settings.

Fegu

Leaning towards the store-build now, just to spare myself the usual frustrations like missing a required screw, or a cable too short... always the last-step obstacle that delays finishing the job at home. I've had to make my components search more limited, based on what is available in the country ;w;

renkash

Oof. I grew up in a tech household. Spare screws were never an issue. And honestly it's not always a terrible misfortune if there is one. Cable too short is becoming less and less of an issue too. As for the country related issues. Am sorry.

I would look to you tube on videos to remove your current CPU cooler. Check the bottom of the cooler itself. I came across a computer once that the packing sticker was left on the cooler when attached to the CPU. (had the same overheating problem, just remove the sticker, clean both surfaces and add a little thermal paste)

Naj

Good luck on the computer components.

Fegu

Oh, I did all kind of tests, and replaced the thermal compound a few times. Don't worry, I didn't leave the original sticker on the cpu. Poor computer would've died years ago! :'D

Fegu

thank you : )

Hopefully everything goes well, never fun having a computer part just fall apart on you :/ Would you be willing to show what your new workstation will look like, it's always fun to see computer builds (assuming it isn't too much trouble!)
