You really can't compare modern politics to the feudalism of dynastic China. A lot of the factional conflicts in the Emperor's court were about power and gaining wealth, okay, maybe that is the case with bad government systems today too (*cough*). But in a fictional setting like this, it's usually framed so that the bad guys want power and the good guys want what's best for the continued success of the Emperor and the nation. It also involves a lot of violence and death. Nobody gets to retire if they lose a factional fight. If you want a more realistic portrayal of the dynastic system, you'd need to watch a drama like *Nirvana in Fire*—often considered the *Game of Thrones* of C-drama (minus the dragons)—or *Story of Yanxi Palace*, which is one of my favorite royal court dramas.

Now that you mentioned the apothecary diaries, a lot of people found maomao and jinshi similar to the female lead and male lead, maybe just appearance wise? (i haven't watched the anime yet)

The first frost is great! Cdramas are a different taste, i think you'll love them!

A Chinese marquis (侯, hóu) was a prestigious title in ancient China, often awarded to high-ranking generals and officials for military merit. It represented a top-tier hereditary nobility title, distinct from military officer ranks, and often included tax-collecting rights over specific households.

Dayin is their dynasty. Instead of the Ming Dynasty, they are in the fictional Dayin Dynasty. The 2 people debating in the palace was Grand Tutor Li and Chancellor Wei Yan. I think Wei Yan is in charge of the military like a secretary of defence. After the meeting: Grand Tutor Li asked if any news from the young lord about the marquis disappearance. The guy talking to Chancellor Wei said they were too close to He Jingyuan's territory and they didn't want to alert him, but they have dispatched men to continue to search for the marquis in secret. Later in Lin'an: The guy in the carriage who gave Changyu a ride said his surname was Li. Li is doing an investigation about the marquis' whereabouts and he believes Lin'an is a place of interest because some mysterious people stopped once they reached Lin'an and then disappeared. Li said that Teacher told him to investigate secretly. When Li leaves, Zheng speculates whether they were He Jingyuan's people.

Let’s go with the journey of 40 episodes. I like to rewatch this for 3rd time with you

DryLtd

I don't know if we can throw him into the deep end of the 50+ episode great shows. Let's see how he handles 40.

First frost was AMAZING! The challenge with that one tho is it has ties with ‘Hidden Love’ and that’s why a lot of people started it for because it was about a character in there then we all realised it is amazing on its own. But forewarning you WILL have people requesting Hidden Love due to First Frost

Well, the thing about cdramas is that you're not going to find very many short series in this genre. Most of the historical/fantasy ones are long. It just comes with the territory. The contemporary cdramas are shorter, but I don't think they are as good. Koreans do better contemporary dramas.

The chancellor is more like a prime minister than a secretary of defense

Depending on the dynasty, rankings/titles or roles can sometimes change. Generally i think the explaination you mentioned is correct. They usual govern a border territory and acts as a military commander. It's hard to explain but a Marquis/Margrave/Marquess or 侯爷 Hou Ye had an interesting role in politics in Chinese society despite being under a duke because of its military aspect. A duke, although above a Marquis, didn't have as strong of a military influence. While both had their armies, Dukes were usually titles given to relatives of royalty thus usually held high positions in court whereas Marquis/Marquess were generally border lords or nobles of military prowess. I hope the distinction makes sense. As for the difference between the old officials: Grand Tutor Li (older guy) is one faction, Chancellor Wei (younger one) is the other faction and General He Jingyuan (which we haven't seen yet as of this episode) is another person, so it's three different people.

Carbon

Appearance-wise, yes. But the characters’ dispositions are vastly different. Pretty sure the actors would be able to pull it off tho.

I am enjoying the reactions to this, and hope you also continue to enjoy this cdrama and potentially future ones you may watch. It's a fun time when you really get into it and the episodes can really fly by making the 40 eps seem not to bad in the end.

The Fool

The Ost in this drama is one of my all time favorites. I hope you do it 4 days a week. You should watch Hidden love first and then First frost.

Peppermint

I can't wait for you to see the shift in the story. Some people get confused following the plot for the story. And it is a little difficult for people, I think, who aren't familiar with Chinese culture. But you googling stuff will help a lot. My husband watched it with me and would google things, especially how their currency works. Lol

Ryan Hayes

this will be my 4th rewatch since I first saw the series a month ago. I consider this a perfect show (even with any flaws it may have in others eyes).

Mr. GPT

I really hope you’ll continue this series. I’m so happy that you’re reacting to Pursuit of Jade. I’m enjoying it very much!! I also hope to see more of your reactions to other Chinese dramas in the future. As for this drama, there are a lot of city and character names, so I suggest writing them down as we go along to keep track more easily. Especially because one person can have multiple names—the name given by their parents, a courtesy name, and possibly a noble title. For example, the male lead: he said his name is Yan Zheng, but as we’ve seen, his real name is Xie Zheng, and he holds the title of Marquis of Wu’an.

Veil of Shadows is NEW and SO GOOD! But we’ll see loll

Brissygirl

Zheng is both a general and a noble. Grand Tutor Li is just a giant suck up and yes he is trying to influence the emperor into agreeing with his way of thinking. He is also the grandfather of the guy who helped Changyu when she was attacked by the wolf. Chancellor Wei is a former general and now politician who is in charge of military campaigns etc. Basically he's the big military boss and everyone else is under him. In future episodes when they talk about "memorial" from people that are not in the capital they are saying that person has sent a report of what is going on in their area.

Of course, even to this day, patriarchal is pretty much the default marriage system around the world. The matriarchal version allows for the legal loophole here where a male can marry a matriarch in order to accept their inheritance rights.
