Gracie poo

So glad you did extra. I'm very similar, I just binged this show as much as I could when it was out. 😭😭😭

Ceyda Nur

Maybe you should take some notes that would be easier considering the names and amount of characters there are

Deseray Stoner

Grand Princess is the sister to the emperor, her brother took the throne. I think lol

Emmy

So from my understanding the entire drama is set in one country. So every time they talk about a crown prince or the grand princess they are all from the royal family of the same country. So the struggle is internal, and all different places they name is in the same country, just different “states” I guess you could say but all in the same country. And about the grand princess. Zheng would have married up (since she is a princess and he is “just” a marquis) if they got married since she is the grand princess and that’s what he would have been a prince consort (from my understanding). There is no crown princess since women could not lead the country only a prince. The crown princess would be the wife of the crown prince. You are doing great with recognizing the names and who is who!!!!!!!!! The reactions are amazing. Sorry for the long comment but I hope it answers your questions☺️

The reason why Xie Zheng explain poems for Changyu is Classic Chinese is written language used by ancient Chinese people, and it's hard to understand if you've never learn it before. It's very different from daily spoken in China. Even right now, we are still studying Classic Chinese at school. English translation can't really show how beautiful the poem is.

So there are three main factions right now: the Wei clan, Li clan, and Sui clan. They’re all part of the same country, Dayin. The Sui clan is Prince Changxin’s clan, and he’s rebelling against the current puppet emperor backed by Wei Yan, the chancellor. Dayin has 17 prefectures, kind of like states, and the war is happening in the four border prefectures. Chongzhou is one of them, and it’s Prince Changxin’s area. As for Qi Min’s identity, in this episode he refers to Prince Changxin as father, so for now you can associate him with the Sui clan. The Crown Prince stuff gets explained later, so don’t worry.

Actually, China did invent gunpowder weapons, including the earliest prototypes of guns and cannons, long before they spread to the rest of the world

They've done such a good job of establishing Xie Zheng as formidable even though he's spent most of the show hurt and male-wifed. He's like a force of nature: so many people fear him but also want him on their side. They'd rather he fight for them than be dead. It's so compelling! And Linghe is acting the hell out of the role! He seems so composed and unbothered but also so ruthless at times. Some cdrama leads do not seem powerful to me, they seem kind of corny and appear to brag without the presence to back it up. He seems so genuinely powerful though. He's fearsome while also being very complex, warm, and devoted to his new family. The character and actor are both amazing!

Also I loved you pointed out that Bao er is always dripped out just like his momma 👑

Xienne

Prince Changxin rebelled against Dayin (country)so they're all part of one realm.

This episode is so romantic! The poetry and the gazing and the doing things for each other! The part about looking at your loved one and feeling like you stepped into the sun made me tear up ♥️

Haha yup it is an internal conflict! I don’t wanna say too much to spoil but basically Prince Changxin and Prince Changde are princes of the previous dynasty. They mentioned about the previous emperor abdicating too. Basically princes who don’t win the emperor seat and given and fiefdom to govern. But they still hold a lot of influence. And their descendants are still of royalty and can inherit the throne. But very down the line. Unfortunately I can explain much about Qi Min without spoiling. But I assure you it will make sense. The crown princess in which they speak of was married to the previous crown prince changde. In the current era, there is no crown prince or princess. A couplet is a Chinese tradition. We wrote auspicious works on red paper and stick them around the house. There’s a custom for a family member to write it for the house. Common places are around doors because it’s believe when you walk through the doors, whatever’s written on the couplets will happen to you (hopefully) 😂 now most families just buy premade ones, there’s a lot of commonly used couplets. I’m sure some families with a calligraphy background write their own.

eimi

Ah when I write previous dynasty/era I mean the era of the previous emperor. We rename the time period based on who the reigning emperor is. I don’t want it to be confused with a dynasty as in a time period of a sequence of rules from the same family. I hope that’s not too confusing. I’ll fix the typos in a bit 😅 but Qi Min is not Prince Changxin or Changde.

MinLuna21

One thing i love of this show is the cinematography.

Peppermint

Thank you for the extra episode! I'm soooo excited for you to get further.

The only other nation mentioned so far is Beijue (Northern Barbarians). Sixteen years ago, Dayin fought a war against Beijue and lost Jinzhou City in the process. Xie Zheng’s father and the former Crown Prince both died in that war. But the real reason how Dayin loses the war is still a mystery.

Xenodix

Fun fact: The line “When someone is truly happy, their heart makes a sound” was actually written by Changyu actress herself.

CA

Northern Jue is a different country. 16 years ago, Dayin and Northern Jue were at war. The crown prince and Xie Zheng’s father went to defend Jinzhou and were killed. Northern Jue took Jinzhou. 16 years later, Xie Zheng took Jinzhou back from Northern Jue and avenged his father. Historically, the crown prince traditionally resides in the Eastern Palace. In Pursuit of Jade, after the death of Crown Prince Chengde in battle, the Eastern Palace caught on fire.

CA

The drama focuses on the internal power struggle within Dayin, but it also has outside threats from Northern Jue.

Here's a cheat sheet of the different family names/clans to help you remember: 1. Qi - led by Emperor Qi Sheng, brother of the Grand Princess, Qi Shu 2. Xie - led by Xie Zheng, father was Xie Lishan who died with Crown Prince Chengde in the war 16 years ago 3. Wei - led by Wei Yan, Xie Zheng’s uncle, brother of Xie Zheng’s mother; General He is under Wei Yan’s command; son is Wei Xuan 4. Li - led by Grand Tutor Li Jing, grandfather of Li Hua’ian 5. Sui - led by Prince Chanxin who has 2 sons. Eldest is Sui Yuan Huai (aka Qi Min). 2nd son and heir is Sui Yuan Qing (has been mentioned but hasn’t appeared yet); Prince Chanxin has some claim to the throne (that's why he's a prince) and wants to overthrow the current Emperor and take over

As a boy raised in a noble household, he'd be educated in calligraphy and the classics, and maths, and etiquette, and martial arts strategy etc etc. From what I read the education is pretty brutal, as is the expectations.

Dana

I was gonna say, plenty of guns Ive seen in my historical cdramas..I didn't think that was imported.

CA

After Xie Zheng’s parents died, he was raised by his uncle, Chancellor Wei, and his wife. In an earlier episode, it was mentioned that the chancellor hired the best masters to teach Xie Zheng when he was growing up. They must have had a good relationship until Qi Min tried to weaken Chancellor Wei’s power by driving a wedge between him and Xie Zheng with the investigation into the Jinzhou massacre of 16 years ago. BTW, Qi Min is the alias he uses while posing as a rice merchant in enemy territory.

Hey, I hope this helps and isn't too much at once.

DAC_clara99 MJ

Hey, I hope this helps and isn't too much at once. CHEAT SHEET HOW NAMES WORK In this drama, one person can have: a real name a title a courtesy name an alias/fake identity Example: “Marquis"= Rank "Wu’an” = title “Xie Zheng” = actual name “Yan Zheng” = fake/common identity “Jiuheng” = courtesy name All are the SAME person. MAIN CHARACTERS CHARACTER | ACTUAL NAME | ALIAS / COURTESY NAME | TITLE / RANK | POSITION Male Lead | Xie Zheng | Yan Zheng / Jiuheng | Marquis Wu’an | Marquis + military commander Female Lead | Fan Changyu | Shanjun | — | Butcher’s daughter / military figure Qi Min | Sui Yuanhuai | Qi Min | — | Son of Prince Changxin Miss Yu | Yu Qianqian | — | — | Fan Changyu’s best friend Li Clan Heir | Li Huai’an | Wen Kan | Lord Li | Li clan heir/grandson Wei Clan Head | Wei Yan | — | Prime Minister | Head of Wei faction Emperor | Qi Sheng | — | Emperor | Current ruler of Daiyin Grand Princess | Qi Shu | — | Grand Princess Royal | Emperor’s sister Scholar | Gongsun Yin | — | — | Scholar/headmaster figure Rebel Prince | Sui Tao | Prince Changxin | Prince | Head of Sui rebel faction Rebel Son | Sui Yuanqing| — | Heir Apparent | Prince Changxin’s son (kinda gave up on the spacing, i hope it's not too jumbled up understand) THE THREE MAIN POWER FACTIONS 1) WEI CLAN Current strongest faction in court. Led by: Wei Yan (Prime Minister) Controls: much of the imperial court politics influence around the emperor They are NOT openly rebelling. They want power INSIDE the system. 2) LI CLAN Main political rival to the Wei clan. Led politically by: Li family elders: i.e the old man Main younger representative: Li Huai’an The Li clan is also fighting for influence in court. Again: NOT rebels. Just political rivals. 3) SUI FACTION (REBEL SIDE) Led by: Prince Changxin (Sui Tao) THIS is the rebel faction. Important: “Prince Changxin” is a TITLE, not his name. His family surname is: Sui. So: Sui = imperial/rebel clan Changxin = princely title The war is a civil war. Prince Changxin controls several border prefectures and military territories. Prefectures are basically: provinces/states military regions Because he controls border armies, he already has: troops supplies military authority regional loyalty Instead of defending the borders from foreign kingdoms, he has turned those forces inward toward the capital to challenge the throne. IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE Faction Goal Wei Clan Political dominance Li Clan Political dominance Sui Faction Take the throne by force QI MIN EXPLAINED Qi Min = Alias His real identity is: Sui Yuanhuai. He is connected to the Sui royal/rebel line. This is why: his identity is secretive his actions are suspicious people react strongly to him MISS YU (YU QIANQIAN) At Episode 13: her full background is still mysterious she is connected to Qi Min/Sui Yuanhuai she has a child, Bao’er many details are still intentionally hidden The show reveals her story slowly. THE CROWN PRINCE / EASTERN PALACE Crown Prince The Crown Prince is: the next emperor. The heir to the throne. Eastern Palace The administrative residence of the Crown Prince. So when characters mention: Eastern Palace Crown Prince seals Crown Prince matters they are talking about: succession and imperial inheritance. IMPORTANT: At the current point in the story: there is NO active Crown Prince. So references to: “the Crown Prince” “Eastern Palace” usually refer to: past succession struggles previous royal generation old political events GRAND PRINCESS Qi Shu The emperor’s sister. She has emotional tension/romantic history with: Gongsun Yin. Court politics make relationships complicated because marriages affect: alliances noble clans succession politics The empress dowager and Li clan is also trying to politically connect her with: Li Huai’an. SIMPLE SUMMARY OF WHAT IS HAPPENING The empire of Daiyin is unstable because: the Wei clan dominates court politics the Li clan competes against them Prince Changxin has started a rebellion hidden succession secrets exist several characters are using fake identities

Historical Drama's tend to have characters with multiple names. Title, Legal Full Name, Courtesy name, Familial nickname, and Familial rank name (Second Master or Third Daughter). In one conversation 3 of them can be used still talking about one person but in different aspects of their life based on those involved in the conversation. It can be confusing if you just let the name wash over you as meaningless only to later realize whole scenes are discussing someone important.

As a person who lived in a small town. You know everyone. The jerks and the nice people. You will see them everyday. You can't live your life trying to avoid the jerks. So you get use to either putting them in their place or bending to their will. The Female Lead does a bit of both.

Carbon

Grand Princess is the puppet emperor’s sister.

Brissygirl

In the novel to hang the new year couplets they use left over rice porridge as glue.

That is so true, the aura is everything when it comes to these characters and sometimes you can't feel it, that was never Linghe's case.
