I'm not going to be that asshole that says "everyone owes Edward an apology" (because seriously, eff that guy), but this episode finally revealed exactly what he was trying to protect Will from: Kreutz "The Mad Dissector", who, when Will failed to get claimed by a faction and remained colorless (and Kreutz rigged the game for that to happen), then that would leave will wide open to be victimized by Kreutz' mad experiments. Of course, what makes Edward an asshole is not having faith in Will's ability to overcome and there being even more people wanting to see Will succeed and overturn what it means to be a "wand", even within the tower and even among the magia vander.
