eeek!! I'm so excited!!

Cheese is real

POB is one of my favouritess, in general I think you pretty much grasped everything going on, took me a while to get used to the names of ALL the places and characters. The only thing I noticed was that when Man Man was leaving her home, the boy/man crying was not the man she was meant to marry but actually her younger brother, confusing as they did not put the name captions for him. So glad to see your reactions to this, its such an amazing show :)

Ending: they show still images (no audio) of the next episode, along with ending song. Unlike PoJ, you're right these are different country states. There are no royal families but clans who control government. They're referred to either Governor of...or Lord xxx. The Wei Clan (male lead) was/is more militaristic. The Qiao clan (female lead), had resources, water and Panxi (what she offered as dowry) but also their home state Yan. Her fiancee was from a neighboring state Liyiang. And there are other states of various sizes, resources and even with different leadership (some have no military force, etc.).

You got gist of it from what i saw, its basically multiple different countries/states. With each having their own form of governance. Yan being governed by the Qiao family as Governor (Man Man, Xiao Qiao' family) Wei with the Wei family in charge (Wei Shao) Liangya with a royal family in charge, the guy who proposed to ManMan being the Heir to that state. Bian that invaded and slaughtered the Wei family led by Liu Su

So happy that you are starting POB. I wasn't expecting it until at least June 1. What a great surprise!! The 2 girls' names are Qiao Fan and Qiao Man, Fan, being the older girl is also called Da (meaning older) Qiao and Man, being the younger girl is also called Xiao (meaning younger) Qiao.

You are doing great with only a few small hiccups that others either explain or corrected. I found PoB easier to follow with all the different characters than PoJ... although maybe not this episode. I do think they throw you in the deep end right at the get go in order to give you the back story. But once you grasp it, it'll be very easy to follow.

This is a set in a fictionalized historical landscape inspired by ancient China's Warring States period, defined by shifting alliances, intense power struggles between rival clans, and resource-driven conflicts. The main states involved are: Yanzhou (home state of the Qiao clan), Wei (home state of the Wei clan), Bian (the state where Liu Su, the man that killed the Wei men 14 years ago is from), and Liangya (home state of the Liu clan. Their heir apparent, Liu Yan, proposed marriage to Man Man). The governor of Yanzhou (sometimes referred to in the show as Yan) is Qiao Gui (grandfather). Heir apparent: Qiao Yuen (his wife-Lady Ding, his daughter-Fan Fan), 2nd son: Qiao Ping (his daughter Man Man, and his son Qiao Ci) Qiao Ci will inherit following Qiao Yuen since Yuen only has a daughter. Only men can inherit.

CA

I think the reason Man Man wants to take her cousin's place is not only to help her cousin but also because she knows she would be able to navigate the political landscape of Wei to help Yan.

In this world, the land is divided among powerful regional clans and territories rather than being ruled by a strong central emperor. So unlike Pursuit of Jade, where much of the conflict was internal to one court, this story focuses heavily on alliances, warfare, and power struggles between different regions. It’s very similar to China’s Warring States period. For now, the major players are Wei Shao and the Wei clan, who rule Wei territory, and the Qiao clan of Yanzhou, led by Xiao Qiao’s uncle. (Xiao Qiao’s nickname is Man Man btw.) Since her uncle is the head of the Qiao family, his daughter (Xiao Qiao’s cousin) was originally the one intended for the political marriage alliance. Xiao Qiao also already had a separate betrothal to Liu Yan, the son of another regional ruler. Liu Yan and Xiao Qiao were childhood friends, not cousins. There’s no blood relationship between them. I think that was a translation issue.

Dana

The three kingdom era, which inspires millions of dramas and video games. Lots of action and drama, but in truth it would have sucked to live then, most especially if you were just a commoner.

Jordan

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m so excited!!!!

Dana

This was an era where anything went. Clans were wiping out clans. The peasants suffered, there was no stability. Tbh, I had no sympathy for any of the major players, all of them were stained with blood. But I do like the heroine and how clever she when the odds are against her. True courage.

New subscriber here cause you're watching my favorite Cdrama!! - hard to find good reactors watching cdramas, glad to see you picking this up (:

Jae

the one crying watching her leave was her younger brother not her fiance/childhood friend, she has younger brother who partly blame himself as he cannot defend their clan as a man, and had to see her sister marry off this "villain" as for them wei shao is terrible man who is after all of their heads which is true

Milo

Excited for this

Overlord

I'm watching this for the first time alongside you but the names Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao, are 100% reference to Two Qiaos of Jiangdong, the sisters who married the warlord of south and his advisor. they were known to be exceptionally beautiful. i wonder if this is just a nod to that or will that groom turn out to be some kind of strategist that joins wei family later down the line along with his new wife edit: after rewiding back a bit, her actual name is Qiao Man and other one is Qiao Fan, with them having nicknames Qiao Xiao and Da Qiao so it is most likely just director/author trying to reference the two qiaos from three kingdoms period to state how beautiful these two are

DryLtd

Was not expecting this to be the second C-drama. I don't like the opening because it has too many scenes from the actual show.

This is a wonderful is enemies to love series. Good call and a great story. Different tone that you wanted after Pursuit of Jade.

Both The Prisoner of Beauty and Pursuit of Jade are set in fictional, overarching dynasties constructed by blending distinct periods of Chinese history. While both stories use the backdrop of a crumbling empire to drive their narratives, they look back to entirely different eras to craft their political stakes, societal rules, and visual aesthetics. Prisoner of Beauty: The Iron-Blooded Chaos of the late Eastern Han * Political Landscape: The story mirrors the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period. The central imperial power has collapsed into a mere puppet state. Warlords and powerful aristocratic clans (like the Wei and Qiao families) act as independent rulers of their own fiefdoms. * Philosophical Echoes: Although fundamentally a Han-style warlord conflict, the setting heavily incorporates the romanticized political friction of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. Warlords hold titles like "Marquis of Yan," operate completely autonomous armies, and engage in ancient diplomatic maneuvers such as taking political hostages and arranging strategic marriages. * Visual Aesthetic: The cultural etiquette, armor, and wedding garments strictly adhere to the ancient, majestic sensibilities of the Qin and Han Dynasties. Pursuit of Jade: The Civil Sophistication and Northern Frontiers of the Northern Song * Political Landscape: Set in the fictional "Great Yin Dynasty," the overarching political atmosphere is heavily modeled after the Northern Song Dynasty. The plot thrives on intense court factionalism, political purges, and a constant, looming threat of invasion on the northern borders. * Societal Values: The social environment reflects the bustling commodity economy and progressive gender norms of the Song era. Women possess distinct property rights—evidenced by the female protagonist, Fan Changyu, managing her family business as a legal female household head and taking a "matrilocal husband" (or married-in husband) to protect her inheritance. * Visual Aesthetic: The television adaptation firmly anchors itself in a Northern Song style combined with the harsh climate of North/Northeast China. The court officials wear the iconic Song-style long-winged hats (zhanjiao putou) and white neck rings (fangxin puyuan), while the external environment is defined by heavy snowstorms and stark, frozen northern frontiers.

RahaMi

POB is excellent too! Glad you are finally watching it! By the way the OST is sang by the male lead, Liu YuNing. Also, this era of China is depicted in the warring states period, where warlords (remenants of the previous fallen dynasty) from different states are fighting each other to gain control of the entire central continent to eventuially, start a new dynasty. (In the case of actual history). You can take a quick look at this wiki link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warring_States_period It shows the actual states during the warring states. Wei was one of those states

Brissygirl

Liu Yuning did such a good job in his portayal of the male lead. I hope he has some songs throughout the series, he has such a beautiful voice.

Coco T
