i love this show, i dont really like romcoms (movies and tv series) but anime hits different

It's tough because his dad is moving on with his life and new girlfriend, then the mom is having her own issues so maki I kinda caught in the middle.

His dad basically devoted himself fully to work and not to family. He ended up working more and more, being home less often (even down to once a week, if that). That led to them drifting apart and even small stuff blowing up. Remember Nina's comment about a dud bomb from last episode. If I remember right, Umi's dad is a self defense force officer.

I think the big thing with Maki is just like his mom they’re both stuck on the good times they had as a family and haven’t been able to move on and that silence they have now is a constant reminder of that. When Maki saw his dad with his new girlfriend and him saying that he loves her shattered the only thing holding him back from breaking down and keeping that dream alive. On their end yeah the dad provided for them but I think the mom hasn’t recovered from losing they guy she loved and what that caused to her and to an extension Maki so I think with her it’s guilt that’s eating her up also part of the reason she quit her job. Which is why the photo album was open but there were also 3 empty cigarette boxes next to it.

Sora, Umi’s mom, is rather similar to Shihoko, Amane’s mom (The Angel Next Door), in terms of personality and how she already treats her child’s love interest as family. Coincidentally, Tatsumaru Tachibana (who plays Umi’s brother Riku) is married to Minami Tsuda (who plays the main cast’s homeroom teacher).

Very interesting. This is really not the typical pseudo harem "looser guy gets pretty girl" story, and they are really building into the things surrounding the couple. I think the storytelling is sometimes a bit clunky but can't exactly put my finger on it in what ways. I still like this a lot.
