Good thing about modern Ln and mangas is that they keep going even after the main couple gets together. Thank god the days of 200 chapters for them to only confess in the last 3 is over

So the whole plan Maki came up with was based on what Umi's dad said about it being ok to be selfish as a child. It was done knowing full well things wouldn't work out anymore and basically a way to say what he couldn't during their divorce (the tantrum) and creating one last memory as parents and child.

i think the thing is that he just wanted to speak the things he was never able to say. it is selfish and childish but those are the things he always wanted to say i guess. although yeah lord idk this episode feels mad awkward honestly😭 damn

sadaholic

but also i think ur take on it is correct. he isn’t legitimately asking them to be together again, he already knows its way too late for that so that definitely wouldnt make sense

Espor

Yeah, that is pretty much what I understood as well. He thought he had to say that back then as a child so he said it later

FreshestAnime

ohhh, damn. Yeah Im too dumb to realize that, i definitely needed him to say "this is wow I felt at the time of the divorce" I thought he was saying this stuff now because he still felt this way. The idea of speaking in the present tense conveying what you wanted to say in the past seems really weird for my brain.

The others have already explained it and i would 100% agree with you if we didnt get the scene with Umis dad last week. He just wanted to let everything out, he bottled up. Regardless of it making sense or rather knowing it wont change anything. Simply wanted to use the "im a kid" card.

ik u said its very selfish of him (it def is) and It’s def awkward af to watch all this go down, but at the same time 1. He is a child and 2. yk what else is selfish? splitting with ur spouse after having a kid. They didn't choose to be born into a family that will eventually split YOU (makis parents) choose to have a kid and then split. Not saying they should've stayed together or that its their fault (they obv didnt know at the time it would end in divoroce) but just that alone gives him every right to be extra selfish and more.

I think the present tense was simply just him saying his current feelings since he still wants them to be together even though he knows it's pointless. It is what he wanted to say during the divorce but he was finally able to say what he always thought. On a side note, the picture is also the main "selfish wish" that he and Umi came up with. Not sure if shown in the anime, but when Umi is looking at Maki's photo album with his mom and him, there is one last empty slot in the book for a photo (with the previous one being a Christmas photo right before the divorce). The photo was bringing it full circle to close the book on his family.

i'm sorry joe, your correct entirely, it just hurts to watch you get so fired up because you forgot the context of last episode 😂.

Grumbledorp

also context or no context you are damn right about them making up, the parents should not be so argumentative and refuse to even see each other when Maki is in the mix, they don't need to get back together they just need to be cordial with each other for his sake. (although he never expressed that so i guess they didn't think it was an issue coz they kinda dumb)

Minato in the picture with the other students was so funny. I had to take a 2nd look too 🤣

Yeah, the novel explained it better (after all in the novel you can read their inner thoughs, aside from some scenes they cut from the anime that might have helped explain it better in some parts)
