The "love" letters were actually from Sylvester's older sister that got passed over as heir once Sylvester came along. She was very bitter about it. I guess she felt she had a sympathetic ear in her uncle who was cast aside and thrown into the church because of his low mana. Instead, Sylvester's older sister was married off outside of the duchy into another one.
