I actually think the Lady of Bian is truly regretful. 'I should be happy' is an interesting way of phrasing it. Really in their world it's all a matter of fate and circumstances that is beyond their power and survival unfortunately means removing rivals. Most don't have the luxury of love. They are all warlords fighting to be the winner to create their own dynasty by taking all the country. Just because we get too see one is more sympathetic is only a matter of perspective. Ultimately they are all the same, some are more ruthless than others...but that is the way of power. And every feudal dynasty was founded on blood.

During ancient times (even into the early 1900's) in China, extended families (father, adult sons and the sons' family) most often live in the same household. As such, power struggles and scheming among the women is not unusual. If the grain incident was perpetrated by an outsider like Man Man or Wei Yan to harm the people, it would be a political crime against the state and subjected to punishment according to the law. If it is a mother-ln-law scheming against her daughter-in-law, then it is viewed as a domestic affair to be dealt with by the matriarch of the family. I do think her punishment was way too lenient. Have a great vacation Joe.

This is a story about trust. Who has and doesn't have it. Who will one allow to gain it. Who should not ever have it. Most conflicts in the story are based on characters trust levels which motivates their dialogue and plot situations. So him not trusting his wife is what opposition wants. Grandma and us, the audience, want him to trust his wife.

They offed her because they couldn't risk her talking under torture or whatever and implicating them in the wheat seed scandal, but it backfires eventually.
